Interview with Pawel Tekieli

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Life is Pala - Black Gold. This is a song of a friend of mine. First of all, I love how it sounds but the process was a journey. We recorded it completely at my home, it the living room. I programmed the drums for this song, created all the tones. It was a blast to work on it!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Three projects, 3SIOSTRY and Fort BS are still in the works as they want to produce a single at a time, not full LPs. Third one is my private metal project that I'm working on with my friend. Some covers for my YouTube channel in the meantime.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both but mostly digital. Because these days digital 'gear' is excellent and the fact is that if something sound good, it's good. I don't care if it's true analog gear or not, it should sound good, that's all.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: There is no shortcut or preset to achieve the sound you want to hear. That's why I always approach each project individually.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: The creative process combined with technical work and understanding. This combination is pure gold for me, two of my most favorite perspectives and skill sets at once.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: That the mixing is easy and anybody can do it with no experience.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: What is the vision? What do you want to achieve with the mix? What it should feel? What are your expectations (soundwise)?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Try to find THE guy. Talk with him/her, find out if the vibe is there, if he/she understands your vision. This is the most important thing from my experience.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Laptop with all my plugins, iLok dongle, Sennheiser HD650 headphones, Audient iD14 and a guitar. All I need to make a record! That's a remote work but next level!

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I've started almost 8 years ago, trying to record my guitar at home. This was a rabbit hole that led me to the place I'm at today. I've learned everything mostly by myself and became the mixing engineer working with recognizable bands who started in his bedroom.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Raw, punchy, angry but transparent at the same time. My mixes sound like me but still completely different from band to band. I want to give the artist the best that they offer in their music but still providing the sound that is mine.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: That's hard but if I have to choose only one, it will be Meshuggah because I would like to capture the rawness of their music, the tightness they have in their playing but still maintaining the organic feel of it.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: The one and only - shit in, shit out. In other words, the better the takes the better the final production.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: Mostly rock and metal but I've got experience with other genres.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: There is more than one... Professional attitude, attention to details, understanding the artist, communication and being able to turn the "We want it to sound like..." into reality.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: Personality. Mine, of course, I'm the mixer but most important for me is to create a sound that corresponds with the band or artist. I want them to feel it just like they imagined.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: First, I want to know about the project, I want to understand the vision behind it. If possible, I ask about the references to other already published music. Then I prepare the scratch mix and here the fun begins! Usually, I'm able to complete the project from start to finish in two week with all of the revisions and tweaks. I'm pretty fast and good at it.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I'm 'all-in-the-box' guy so most on my setup is digital but I also have a small studio that I'm using mostly for reamping. I have few amps and cabs (mostly custom) and typical mic set like SM57/58 oraz Sennheiser e906.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: I'ma big fan of Tue Madsen, Will Putney, Buster Odeholm, Adam 'Nolly' Getgood, Forrester Savell, Jens Bogren and many others but those are my all time favorite producers, mixing engineers.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: I'm usually mixing and mastering engineer in projects on my clients. That's most of the gigs I've done but I'm usually creating and shaping the tone of the band as well. From programmed drums, guitars and bass tone to additional production layers like synths.
