Clark on SoundBetter

Hi, I make dancey, groovy songs I Pop, EDM I placements: New Music Friday, Dance Brandneu (300K) / international radio airplay / commercial music for brands / main artist project: CLARK S (vocals/songwriting/production)

My strengths as a singer lie in energetic, dancey or groovy Pop and EDM songs. As a vocalist and songwriter my priority is to give your song a unique touch and character. Your vision comes first and I'll give my best to take your song to the next level. Weekly writing sessions and a masters degree in pop vocal performance, songwriting and production helped me specialise in vocal recording and coming up with toplines, lyrics and arrangements fast. I'm fascinated by Pop and electronic music because it aims to narrow down a song to its essence.

What I offer:
- Vocals: lead vocal recording/comping/tuning (Melodyne/Autotune), backing vocal arrangement & recording (additional fee: 100$)
- Songwriting: Topline Melodies / Lyrics
- Production: Synth/Keys, Drum Programming, Electric Guitars

To start our collaboration just send me a demo of your song that you want me to work on and describe your plans with the song. Ideally send me some reference tracks to give me a better idea of your vision. Artist credits / collab releases are to be discussed and depends on the project.

Do you think my vocals, songwriting or production would fit your song? Then let's work, can't wait to hear your music!

Interview with Clark

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The EP I'm releasing for my own project CLARK S soon is the first production where my role wasn't only being the artist and songwriter, but also did the full production myself. The past 4 singles will be on that EP in case you wanna get a taste of what it sounds like. Or just wait until the full project is out.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently rolling out my second EP which will be out in May and I'm already working on my debut album besides that.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: There are so many talented people on here. But to chose someone, Benjamin Alasu for production. I work with him regularly and he's my favourite producer.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both have their pros and cons. But I mostly work digitally.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will put all my emotion and effort into your project if we collaborate. Especially when I'm the singer, my goal is to become one with the track and bring the vocals and production together smoothly.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love that every day is different and brings new challenges. Being an artist means performing on different stages. I always need a new challenge which is why I got into music production next to performing live shows with my band and songwriting.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: after 8 years of working as a musician I still get asked what my real job is haha!

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What do you wanna say with the song? What format are you making the song for? (goal radio/spotify/music video etc.) What is your target group/fan base like? What singing technique do you hear on the song and why? Which emotion do you wanna capture in the song? What are your main influences you wanna bring into the song?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Feel free to say exactly what you wanna change so that we can get to a result that you love 100%. It's important to trust the process and be open to work on the song to get where you want to get to.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: MacBook Pro, Shure SM7b, DT 770 Beyerdynamic Headphones, Focusrite Clarett 4pre Interface, Akai MPK Mini Midi

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I started to play the drums as a kid, and started writing songs as a teenager. I do it professionally for 6 years now.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: uptempo, groovy, danceable, good vibes

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Writing session with Justin Timberlake - even if I could just add one word to the song

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Using transient shaper instead of more high passes is the key. And don't always ask yourself which instrument is missing in the song, but which frequency.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Pop, RnB Pop, Dance Pop, EDM

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Toplining

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: In most cases I'm a melody-first type of writer because my connection to emotion goes through notes. That's why a catchy melody is my first instinct.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: My credo; whenever creativity hits you, you have to obey and follow the calling. But I usually like to do editing work in the morning and go into creative mode the second half of the day.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I use Ableton for all my production and mainly record my vocals with a Shure SM7b mic. For guitars I mainly use a Fender Stratocaster or a Gibson ES-335. The rest of my production is done with many different VST instruments and effect plugins by Soundtoys or Waves for example.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Growing up to NSYNC and later Justin Timberlake is probably the reason I started singing in falsetto. Also there's Charlie Puth, Michael Jackson, The Weekend or the Jonas Brothers that inspire me a lot musically.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: My specialties lie in vocal recording, toplining/lyric writing and vocal arrangements. But to be honest I enjoy many parts in a song production such as drum programming or guitar tracking.
