Interview with MagicOnTheBeat
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’m proud of working on Tyler Perry Presents: Sistas. I’m proud of it because I worked on a song that I took a risk on blending genres and it worked out enough to land a sync placement. I was the music producer and engineer and the risk I took was to blend amapiano and house music. It came out amazing and I was apart of some people landing their first sync placements.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently working on some sync opportunities and preparing for almost 10 song releases with different artist within the the next month or two.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes. Definitely.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Some things you can create with analog you can’t mimic in the digital world and vice versa. My simple explanation for that is because we just can put a formula to that science. But those “mistakes” of wiring, tuning, etc can create an unforgettable sound.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to never quit on them and dismiss their thoughts. Often times, egos can be brought into a session and ruin the possibility of something great being done. I tend to encourage to leave the egos at the door before working. Egos can make ppl quit and become dismissive and that’s what I promise not to bring to the table.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Everything. From the raw beginnings of figuring out what is needed for the client, to the finishing moments of seeing a client satisfied with the results.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you do X,Y,Z? I can do anything you put your mind to.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: You have to be nervous when approaching a producer/engineer. The reality is we are here to serve the client and their needs.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are you looking to accomplish with your project? Do you have any references for what you want your sound to be compatible to?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Let me know everything you want so I can provide everything you need.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If a Dolby atmos speaker set up counts as one piece 🥴, sign me up lol. But I would take the following: 1. 17 inch screen, Alienware laptop with an abundance of hard drive space built in. 2. Universal Audio Apollo Interface 3. Neumann U 87 4. Akai Professional MPC Key 37 5. A pair of Yamaha HS8
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started off as a beat maker at the age of 13 using fruity loops 3. I then went on to play drums in my church from the age of 14. After selling my first beat at 15 I started to learn engineering at my cousins studio around the age of 16. I produced for a lot ofof local talent until I became older and landed my first major placement in 2014 with a Chicago Drill Artist by the name of 600 Breezy. I worked in the RnB and HipHop space mainly during this time and it wasn’t until 2016 I was exposed to working with Lea Robinson who was and Pop/RnB artist. From then on I started to study some of my favorite producers catalogs who started in hip hop but ventured into pop like Kanye West, Timbaland, Rico Love and more. I’ve been producing and engineering for over 15 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is Knock if I can, but feel everything 🤞🏾
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Chris Brown, simply because of his journey and resilience while being a very sharp “Swiss Army knife” in this industry.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Change something every 4 bars to keep a listener engaged with the record.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work In the Pop, RnB, and Hip Hop realm
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Production
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring structure, flavor, and “stank face” to a track.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I have lists of request whether it is brand new or older, I use them as a means for a reference. Im still heavily influence from emotion, I just pour it in to the music and task at hand.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have two spaces I work out of mainly, the home studio, and another studio close by my residence. In home studio, I work with 2 HS8 speakers connected to my Scarlett interface with an AT-20 Audiotechnica microphone.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by Timbaland, Ryan Leslie, Calvin Harris, Kanye West, Mike Caren and more.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I typically do more music production and mixing overall. More recently, clients have been sending me their vocals of full record ideas for me to bells tracks around them.
