Interview with Max Trefler

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: When I first receive a track, I'll take my time listening to the song, understanding the melody and chords changing, and really plugging into the mood and feel of the song. I think it's most important to tap into the vibe and feel of the song first, and then start approaching it from the drums. Once I feel I know the song, I will start trying out parts and ideas that I think will be good for the song. I'll do multiple revisions on my own until I'm happy with the tone and parts for the song, and then will send it to the producer or that artist for notes. Once I receive the notes, I'll do another take with everything in mind and send back another version.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: I have multiple drum sets and snare drum options, ranging from vintage Gretsch Round Badge to modern Yamaha Maple Custom drums and everything in between. I have lots of different options for pre amps and mics, and have access to multiple different high end studios should the need arise for something I don't have at my studio.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: Drummers like Josh Freese, Matt Chamberlain, and Aaron Sterling inspire me by being such dynamic and versatile drummers. They focus on playing for the song, and adding a level of excitement inspired by the melodies and lyrics in the music.

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: The most common work I do is full drum tracks for producers or song writers. I am sent a demo or scratch tracks, along with some drum references or sonic ideas, and then I create a drum track from the ground up, selecting what drums and gear to use to get the right sound for the song. I then will send a rough mix back for the producer or artist to listen to. Once I receive notes, I'll do revisions as required to nail the song.
