Interview with Max Trefler
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring feel, intention, and dynamic energy, the kind of drumming that doesn’t just fill space but helps the song breathe. My goal is always to elevate the emotional arc of the track, whether that means laying down a warm, supportive groove or driving a chorus with just the right lift. Every part I play is shaped by the mood, story, and tone of the music. I aim to enhance the movement, add depth, and bring a musical pulse that complements and amplifies the heart of the song. Ultimately, I bring a collaborative spirit that puts the song first, always.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When I receive a track, I start by listening deeply, not just to the tempo and structure, but to the emotion, dynamics, and mood. I make sure I understand the melody and chord movement so I can create drum parts that truly support the song, not just sit on top of it. Once I’ve connected with the feel of the track, I begin crafting groove ideas and tones that fit naturally. I’ll often do several internal revisions to fine-tune the vibe before sending you a first version. After getting your feedback, I’ll deliver an updated take with your notes in mind - always aiming to serve the song and your vision.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have multiple drum sets and snare drum options, ranging from vintage Gretsch Round Badge to modern Yamaha Maple Custom drums and everything in between. I have lots of different options for pre amps and mics, and have access to multiple different high end studios should the need arise for something I don't have at my studio.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Drummers like Josh Freese, Matt Chamberlain, and Aaron Sterling inspire me by being such dynamic and versatile drummers. They focus on playing for the song, and adding a level of excitement inspired by the melodies and lyrics in the music.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I create custom live drum tracks for artists and producers who want their songs to feel more alive, dynamic, and emotionally grounded. Most of my clients are working in indie, pop, or alt-rock spaces - they send me a demo or rough mix, and I build a drum performance that brings out the groove and character of the song. Whether it’s subtle brush work, tight pop grooves, or energetic fills, I tailor each part to support the song’s mood and momentum. I deliver multi-mic, mix-ready stems with fast turnaround, and I’m always open to revisions to make sure the final take hits exactly the right feel.
