Interview with J. D. Benitez

  1. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  2. A: I usually work in rock styles of all kinds, I usually do quite a few arrangements for ballads, the composition and recording of guitar tracks is usually a large part of my work, whether in metal contexts, through rock, pop, funk, even gypsy jazz. I also do very well in audio post-production, from education to mixing and mastering. If you contact me I can show you my work as a mixing and mastering engineer.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: My best ability is that I am able to listen carefully to music and quickly adapt to the context in which I find myself, which allows me to solve efficiently.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Always think in favor of the music, not virtuosity, complexity or simplicity, think about what your song needs to convey the message you want and how you want it.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: I always do my best to provide great expressiveness and a clean performance depending on the musical context I find myself in. When I mix and master I bring great tonal balance, a defined stereo image and punchy low end.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: Initially I have a detailed conversation with my client where I ask for the necessary details to be able to give a concrete direction to the project. A date is agreed for the first delivery and review, the necessary corrections are made until the customer is satisfied with the product.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: In my studio I use a desktop iMac with two screens to record, edit and mix all my work. I record through a Scarlett Solo 3 Gen interface. I use an Audio-Technica AT202 condenser mic to capture almost everything. I count with a variety of instruments, including an 8 string guitar, a 6 string bass, a couple of steel and nylon acoustic guitars, also Marshall and Peavey amps.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: As a guitar player I get a lot of my inspiration from players like Andy Timons, Synyster Gates, Jason Hook and Andy James. In the field of music production I love Chirs Lord-Alge´s work, also Kevin Churko, Germán León and Halley Jaimes.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: I do arranging, recording, mixing, mastering and sound design on demand. I always strive to have a good working relationship with my clients and I put all my effort into ensuring that they leave happy with the result.
