Tijl is an experienced, versatile and creative touring & session drummer with a big love for warm & strange sounds, crispy textures, and organic electronics.
I'm a belgian drummer based in the Netherlands, with 20 years of experience as a touring and session drummer, and over 10 years as a performer and composer for theatre and film. Besides drumming, I also love experimenting with modular synthesis and electronics.
I record drums, percussion and electronics from my studio or on location. Using my ears and a beautiful collection of vintage drums, cymbals, microphones, recording gear and electronics, I am looking forward to tailor each recording to the perfect sound for your recording.
Tell me about your project and how I can help, and let me know what you'd like, style- & sound-wise. Links to references are welcome.
All that's needed is a rough mix of your song with (if you have) & without drums starting from 0.00, & the BPM.
I would love to hear from you, let's make a record.

Interview with Tijl Piryns
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mainly warm and lush drums with a percussive or experimental touch to it. But I just as well enjoy laying down a solid boom bap.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I got to tour and record with the amazing belgian singer Naima Joris, a one of a kind being that truly challenged everyone in the band, and brought us to amazing places musically and physically (Montreux Jazz, AB, Brussels Jazz, etc.). And the band You Raskal You, a local belgian band with beautiful people that will forever feel as my musical family. I learned so much there, from building huge papier-mâché mountain decor pieces to writing horn-arrangements for our recordings in the infamous Toe Rag Studios in London.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I just finished building a big recorder organ for a theatre piece, and am now experimenting in my studio with combinations between modern electronics & modular synths with vintage drums.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Tara Pasveer, check her out, she's a beautiful being with an amazing vision on music.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Whatever the track needs, both can be beautiful tools.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Listening & people
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The over-glorification of gear in recordings. Gear is nice, ears are better.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Feel free to share the thinking process behind your work, I love to hear what's under the hood.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Ludwig snare, Premier kick, Avedis hats, bolero sticks, book&pencil. That's probably six :)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I studied jazz drums at the conservatory of Antwerp and pop drums at the conservatory of Ghent (with some extra courses in classical composition), got to tour and record nationally and internationally for the past 20 years with some beautiful people, and have been working in theatre productions and writing music for theatre and film for over 10 years.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Blake Mills, as a guitarist, a songwriter, and a producer. Rick Rubin, as a producer and a human being.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A listening ear.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a beautiful little studio that I built in the garden, with daylight and exactly the gear I love and need to tailor my recordings to a song or composition.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Brian Blade never ceases to amaze me, and growing up Levon Helm was a big inspiration too. And what's even better: both of them seem to be nice people. And non-drummers: Blake Mills, Daniel Lanois and Rick Rubin.
