Interview with Kyle Vandy
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Taking mumbling voice memo’s and producing, mixing, and mastering an entire album from those extremely rough ideas. Recorded in the woods off grid with solar and hydro.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: 2 indie pop albums and a country punk EP.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not sure.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. I’ve used outboard on my master but now prefer what I have in the box as there are more options.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Satisfaction.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: It’s art. I look at mixing similar to painting on a canvas.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you work within said budget? Usually yes.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it’s easy to mix. I’m still learning after almost 20 years.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: How close to the demo would you like the mix to be? What are some commercial references you like? What is your budget? Deadline? How far would you like me to take the mix away from the demo?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Give me a ring and let’s talk it through so we are on the same page.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Apogee Symphony, ATC’s, U67, Prophet, and a Tele.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started as a runner at Interscope Records and worked my way up to First Engineer in record time. Now totally freelance and have been mixing records since 2008.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Clean but vibey. Not afraid to make things pop.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Kevin Parker. His productions are genius and would love to mix a Tame Impala track.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more. Arrangement is key to a great song.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: From Hip-Hop to Folk and everything in between. Lately I’ve be working with very artistic indie pop artists.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Artistic vision, communication, and great mixes.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Clarity, vibe, punch, width, and am not afraid to add some special fx (ear candy) to a mix.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First I try to make sure my mix is close to the demo then I start focusing on the things that stick out most. Workflow changes per project basis and I treat every song as their own.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Monitoring through an Apogee Symphony IO into ATC SCM12 Pro’s, NS-10’s, and Reftones. All in the box mixes with plugins from Plugin Alliance, Tokyo Dawn, Waves, and many more.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Rick Rubin, Rob Shnapf, Serban Ghenea, Dave Pensado, MixedByAli.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mixing and Mastering.
