Interview with Twiney
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Imen Es is a french RnB/urban pop artist. I worked with her on an album called Es. I am especially proud because I helped bring my vision to some songs that were originally different, and they made it to the charts in France.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog, the music is originally wave frequencies, I prefer the warmth and natural feel on analog audio.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to grasp your identity and adapt my music to you if we work together.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: We make music, work with a wide range of artists, but we rarely get recognized in the street. ;)
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Do you have free music? Can I pay you in notoriety, visibility? No.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People often think that we only make beats. The reality is that our work is to make the music come alive, from the composition, the arrangement, the mix and overseeing the entire process to make sure that the music keeps its original identity.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What music do you make? Since when? Why do you make music? Can I listen to some?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Do not work with a producer because he is famous or in the charts, work with a producer that has the same musical DNA as you. The only way a song can work is if the artists on it are going in the same direction.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been doing this for 11 years now. Started as a teenager and now working with artists in France mainly.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Big. I like big productions, violins, saxophones, trumpets, big drums, big bass, great pianos and synths, I love when people move their heads to my productions, that means I succeeded in making the song I imagined in my head.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Melanie Martinez. I love her creativity, her music is so versatile and original. I never work with artists that I cannot see myself listening to or music that i do not adhere with (so guess I listen to her a lot).
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always leave room for the singer on your productions.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: RnB, latin music, pop, hip-hop (latin trap, plugg, uk drill, west coast, lo-fi) urban pop and k-pop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Toplining. I can get really fast to a topline when producing a music. If the artist struggles to get started on the composition, I can help try to paint a picture for him.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My difference is my background. I started out making orchestral music, then went on to trap, rap and more generally urban music, and then went to RnB and latin music. I can adapt to a wide variety of genres and know the musical codes to each one of them.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I try to get a good picture of what the artist wants, and then we can begin by listening to some of my productions that I think can match the artist's vibe. If something matches we can begin working on it and try to make something out of it, if not we can go from scratch and try to create a production that can correspond to the artist image.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: ADAM AUDIO A7V (Monitor speakers) beyerdynamics DT 900 PRO X (Monitor headset) RODE NT1 GEN 5 (Microphone) Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (Audio interface)
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I try to inspire myself from a wide variety of artists, singers as well as producers. My main producing inspirations are Benny Blanco, Dr. Dre, Finneas, Manuel Miranda and Hans Zimmer (yes I love to add some orchestra in my songs).
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I work with artists to help them get the accurate picture and sound from their ideas. Together as a team, we make music come alive!
