Interview with Giriu Dvasios
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: My personal projects, collabs with other artists, and I'm also involved in a post-punk band.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: It's a silly question. Who cares? You can take digital and make it sound analog nowadays, or you can take analog and make it sound bland and dry, if you're not a good producer.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I just love making music, it's the most enjoyable thing to do in my life.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That electronic music producers can only make electronic dance music. Not true, if you know how to make electronic music, it means you know how the production works in general.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A laptop, a good pair of headphones, a soundcard, a microphone, a midi keyboard.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started making electronic music when I was about 14 years old. Got into it a lot and never stopped doing it since. I started my most successful project in 2009 known as Giriu Dvasios. It's one of the most popular electronic music names in Lithuania to this day. In 2010 I started my own label called Cold Tear Records, which also became one of the most consistent and prolific lables not on only in Lithuania but in the dub techno / deep techno scene.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Learn at least the basics of sound design, it will open up endless possibilities for you.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip-hop, dub/reggae, techno, house, post-punk, drum & bass. But I'm open to work with pretty much any type of music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is sound design, use of synthesizers, mixing and arrangement.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to work in the studio alone, to fully focus and get a feeling for how the track is flowing. There is no one way to start a project, but it usually begins with a beat, bass and chords or a mellodic element, that I can build on.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: The heart of my setup is of course the computer, the soundcard and the studio monitors. I also use synths like Arturia Microfreak, Arturia Microbrute and many plug-ins.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: When it comes to beat making I'm mostly inspired by Pete Rock, DJ Premier, J Dilla, Q-Tip etc. When it comes to various electronic music, I'm inspired by Aphex Twin, Rhythm & Sound, Babe Roots, Boards of Canada and many others.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I take their ideas and try to execute them as close to their vision as possible, but I also offer my own creative ideas, inevitably giving the song my own flavor. Besides beat making, I can turn an artists idea into a fully produced, ready to be released track.
