Santiago has been amazing to work with! He understood very well the sound and vibe that I wanted to create and was able to make this song sound the way that it was in my head, without taking the essence of it. I appreciate all of his efforts, always making sure that I was ok with every detail.

Interview with Santiago Sposto

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: IMO, the biggest misconception in music production is that a great mix can make a song sound good. I think that at the base of the pyramid is a good song, a good vocal take, then a great production, and finally those can be polished in the mixing and mastering process, not the other way around.

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: How long does the process of producing the song take, how the royalties from what we write are usually divided, and what do I need on my side to start the project. The time may vary from one song to another, but normally, if the song is ready to be produced, I need between two or three days to send you the first version. Regarding the royalties, if we start the song together I believe in dividing them equally. If only some parts need to be rewritten, I can give most of it to the artist, on a case by case basis. I can usually start working with a voice memo or a guitar or piano and voice demo, ideally recorded over a metronome.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: I usually ask the client how they feel most comfortable working, since some prefer the closest connection during the process, and others prefer to give me space to work and send them a proposal. I also check how much time we have to deliver the production and mix, so that we are all on the same page.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: As described in my presentation, I have roots in the modern & organic pop-universe, so I feel very comfortable working with music in which songwriting, melody and vocals are essential.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I enjoy building and bringing songs to life. Every record is important and a chance to make someone feel, and I know that the artists I work with also feel this way, so I take it with that responsibility. I work on their projects with the love and dedication as if they were my own.

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: That they feel comfortable in clearing up all the doubts they have. Producing a song is a very intimate process and it is important that the communication with the person you trusted with your music is fluid and honest.

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: A little over 12 years ago, I started studying music production in Argentina while teaching singing, audio-perceptive and harmony classes. At the same time, I started working in audio post-production for ads. 5 years ago, I moved to Mexico, won a songwriting scholarship in which I was lucky enough to meet incredible artists from the local scene, and from there I dedicate myself exclusively to composing and producing music from my studio, either with artists or in the industry of cinema and advertising.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: Lizzy McAlpine. I think she is one of the greatest singer/songwriters of her generation, and her work is so mature that you wouldn't believe her age. A future classic. If you haven't listened to her yet, I recommend that you do so.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Plain and simple: don't overproduce. I often listen to new music that feels too loaded with information designed more to highlight the producer than to contribute to the song. The same thing happens with some singers who use so many vocal resources that the sense of melody is lost.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I believe that my main contribution is to be a true collaborator who transforms the artist's musical vision into a finished song that he/she/they is proud of and can release to the world.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: Normally the artist comes to me with a song idea, or a complete song. If songwritng is needed, we work on it together and then I produce it. If it is ready to produce, we begin the process of finding the desired sound, recording instruments, mixing and mastering, in permanent communication until the artist is happy with the achieved product.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: In general I co-write, produce and mix songs for my clients. I also record the instruments, unless the project requires something different and we agree that it is better to outsource it.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I have a project studio with high-end microphones and audio interface. It is a space created with great care to maintain a hybrid relationship between a conventional studio and a living room in which you feel inspired to write songs. The most important thing is that this medium-sized space has professional acoustic treatment, which makes the whole difference when recording and mixing the projects I work on.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: On the production/mixing side, I am very inspired by Dan Nigro, Ian Kirkpatrick, María Elisa Ayerbe, Mona Khoshoi, Nico Cotton, Fab Dupont, Jack Antonoff and Mark Ronson. In the writing process, I've always looked up to Julia Michaels, Max Martin, Claudia Brant, Alysa Vanderheym, Jimmy Napes, Tobias Jesso Jr. and Ryan Tedder, to name a few.

  29. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  30. A: Between 2022 and 2023, I produced a very talented Mexican singer-songwriter named MARLLA (you can check out her music) and co-wrote several of her songs, one of which was included in a movie called "Todas Menos Tú", which is currently in theaters. A beautiful example of the power that a song can have.

  31. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  32. A: I am currently producing an EP for a Mexican singer-songwriter, mixing a rock album for an Argentine artist, and composing music for an ad for a company in the United States.

  33. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  34. A: KRAMER is my go to guy for mastering, super talented engineer and solid work ethic too.

  35. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  36. A: In an ideal situation you would use both options, combining them to achieve the best possible result. But if I had to choose one or the other, I would choose digital, to make the creative process that a song entails more fluid.

  37. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  38. A: To deliver something we're both proud of - no matter how many iterations it takes.

  39. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  40. A: Probably a good computer with any DAW, audio interface, mixing headphones, condenser mic and an acoustic guitar.

  41. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  42. A: Everything in-between Pop, R&B and Singer/Songwriter.

  43. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  44. A: Being creative in musical ideas, understanding the needs and searches of the artist, and great attention to detail.
