Interview with Zac Hoina

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Analog for sound, digital for ease of use. I think with guitar tone specifically analog still has my heart, but the world is changing fast and my back hurts from carrying all these amps, so maybe I make the swap one day.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: That these things happen on the first try. The time spent in the studio is sometimes nothing but misses but it's important to get all of it out so you can make room for more. The real gold sneaks up on you when you're doing the dishes.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: I usually ask my clients to define their expectations of the project. What are we trying to convey with this track? What do we want to avoid? Are you looking for my creative input or do you have what you need from me in mind already?

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Ask them why they do session work. That answer is more telling than any demo tracks you're sent.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: I would love to work with Benny Blanco one of these days. His process feels really organic and I think you can hear that in everything he puts his name on.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Always listen to your first mix at low volumes. Those harsh frequencies just jump right out.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: Musicianship aside, I bring challenging questions to a song. I like for everything to be intentional, and if we don't have intention I like to find some. The choice to make things un-intentional is, itself, intention.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: Being wrong until I'm not. I have no problem getting the wrong sound, wrong take, or wrong note choice. That's the only way to find the right one. First ideas can be gold, but I am wary of the bias that comes with that.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: I can record fully isolated, high quality, tracks at home. I have a full studio at my disposal and can record at any volume.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: I mainly do guitar stems for clients, ranging from quiet, laid back, acoustic tracks, all the way to loud, heavy, electric guitar stems.
