Interview with Thom Archi
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My debut LP. I've been working on it for years now and it's the music I'm the proudest of to this day. I was the song-writer, beat-maker and producer for all songs and I'm lucky enough to have Iago Lorenzo and Robin Schmidt to be in charge of mixing and mastering. They are two titans in the industry.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital is more comfortable I think and it's what I'm used to, but nothing will ever beat the feel and sound of analog, I love to use analog gear whenever I get the chance.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I guarantee I will never consider a job 'done' if I'm not happy with how it sounds, I would be disappointing myself.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The end results. I love the feeling of listened to a finished project and feeling proud of the work I've put in.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I only make beats. I love to get involved in all kinds of music and in many different ways.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A solar powered generator, my laptop, my mobile phone, studio monitors and headphones
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: For years now, I started in 2018 and have only been doing this ever since. I released a small album independently that year and got offered an internship at a local music studio. From there I worked on various projects and ended up getting a record deal.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I'm definitely modern. I like to help things sound new and fresh, even if that doesn't imply clarity.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Probably James Blake or anyone related to BROCKHAMPTON. I've been a huge fan for years and they seem like really fun and creative people. I also really enjoy how they think of music and their approach.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always trust your ear. Even though somethings don't seem technically correct, I've learned it's better to embrace the freedom of creativity and enjoy the music, make it something you would like to listen to. Also, it's important not to over-produce anything because it can easily ruin a song, specially in mixing.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I've worked on all kinds of music. From Pop, to Punk, to Electronic and Hip-Hop. I've even done some Reggaeton and Dembow stuff, it's very popular here in Spain. Hip-Hop is probably where I get the most work done though, most of my clients have been involved in the Hip-Hop scene.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I think it's my ear. Music has been my passion for as long as I can remember and my taste is what I'm mostly complimented on, it's also the praise I appreciate the most. I think I'm good at making sure things sound enjoyable for the right reasons and I have a special skill for understanding what songs are trying to do.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I am a perfectionist and I will always make sure I enjoy and approve the quality of the music I work on. I like to respect the artist's ideas and do everything I can to achieve their musical goals.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to adapt to whatever the job is. Sometimes I need to build my work upon someone else's project, and other times I'm asked to create something from scratch, so the process can vary a whole lot. I always try to make sure I am as efficient as possible and I get the best result out of the work I do, so I change my approach depending on the request I get.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use a Macbook Pro and a variety of DAWs equipped with the best plug-ins. For sound I use a combination of quality Sennheiser headphones and Behringer studio monitors, plus midi keyboards and any other necessary tools.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm a huge fan of Pharrell Williams, James Blake and JPEGMAFIA's style, but I find Skrillex's production and mixing skills to be technically next level. I'm also hugely inspired by Rick Rubin and Tyler Joseph and how they're able to bring their musical dreams to life.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I usually focus on making beats, arrangement and vocal editing (comping and tuning), but I'm also very experienced in mixing and I regularly master the tracks I work on.
