Interview with Stelios Papakostas

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I recently completed an entire album consisting of 11 songs—a truly heavy metal experience. I was hired by a virtuoso guitarist to lend my voice to his compositions, bringing the project to life with powerful and dynamic vocal performances.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working on a metal core album and I think it is a challenge for me, as I never dare it before.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: There are many of them and really they are doing a great job. As I am new in Sound Better I think it is too early to insist someone. But promise in the future I will do it.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both of them. While recording I prefer recording with analog equipment, then for the mixing part I use plugins but not many of them as the whole process is already recorded in a high quality level.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: In every new project, I initially try to listen carefully to what the client wants because at the end of the day, it's their project. The next step is that I try to give 120% of my abilities.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I really enjoy experimenting with vocal lines and melodies. Every new collaboration is also a challenge for self-improvement, I believe.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Usually, the demos that come in are roughly sung by musicians, each of whom imagines and expects the singer to get inside their head and translate it as the creator envisions. The answer is that we discuss a lot before the first sample so that I can understand exactly what is needed. When I send the first sample, I usually understand exactly what they want, and then I provide some of my own suggestions without altering the original melody. At the end of the day, it’s simply about a song and, of course, a collaboration.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: To have the song ready for recording and then realize that you're not in good form.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Not many, to be honest. Send me the song as you envision it and let me know the deadline.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Have a clear vision of what you want for your project. Share detailed information about the style, mood, and specific vocal qualities you’re looking for.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Actually I need 2 pieces, My Brauner mic and my Solid state 4000, including the peripherals.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started at the 90s with a heavy metal band named Black Fate and for years I was working as a solo artist around Greece. my studio experience counts more than 25 years.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I think i am a metal singer, what do you say?

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: One of my mentalists is Geoff Tate and I hope maybe some day to collaborate.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Know your setup very well and always have it ready.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mostly Heavy Metal

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I think that beyond the interpretative part, which isn't entirely my responsibility but clearly that of the person who assigned the project to me, it’s that I work at a fast pace.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: A singer serves a song and, depending on its style, must convey the appropriate emotions and expression.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Warm-up, familiarize myself with the song, set up my recording equipment, I experiment with microphone placement to find the optimal position, I perform a sound check, I record multiple takes of the vocal performance, allowing for variations in delivery, dynamics, and expression. After recording multiple takes, I listen back to each one selecting the best parts from each take and compile them into a cohesive vocal performance.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My music studio setup is meticulously crafted to ensure optimal recording quality and creative workflow. Here's a breakdown of the key components: I've dedicated a space of 200sqand a smaller one in 50sq in my home or a separate studio space exclusively for recording. This space is acoustically treated to minimize unwanted noise and reflections, creating a controlled environment for capturing clean and professional-quality audio. I have a selection of high-quality microphones suited for capturing vocals like brauner, akg, neuman, steven slate. I usually use my solid state logic and focusrite preamps. I work primarily within a DAW Steinberg Cubase 13, for recording, editing, mixing, and mastering audio tracks. I also have customized my DAW setup with plugins and virtual instruments tailored to the metal genre, allowing me to sculpt and enhance the sonic characteristics of my recordings. Three pair of high-quality studio monitors, such as models from Yamaha, Dynaudio and KRK are essential for accurately monitoring the sound during recording and mixing.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: As a metal singer, my primary work often revolves around providing vocals for various projects within the metal genre. This typically involves recording lead vocals for original songs, cover tracks, or even guest appearances on albums for other artists. My role is to bring power, intensity, and emotion to the music through my vocal performance. In addition to recording vocals, I may also collaborate with songwriters and producers to develop vocal melodies and lyrical content that aligns with the overall theme and sound of the song. This can involve brainstorming ideas, refining lyrics, and experimenting with different vocal techniques to achieve the desired artistic vision. Furthermore, I may be involved in live performances, either as a frontman for a band or as a guest vocalist for special events or tours. This requires not only delivering a compelling vocal performance but also engaging with the audience and creating an electrifying atmosphere onstage. Overall, my goal as a metal singer is to bring passion, energy, and authenticity to every project I undertake, whether it's in the studio recording vocals or onstage captivating audiences with my performance.
