Dan Blaga on SoundBetter

Session Bass Player for Vandercris, Andrei Tomuta, and others. Over 14 years' worth of experience both live and in the studio. I bring the joy and love of music into my craft and I always put the music above everything else.

I am based in Timisoara, Romania. I have over 14 years' worth of experience, having played in multiple projects, both live (200+ shows) and in the studio (4 LPs to date). I am a founding member of the Romanian fusion group VanDerCris, having tracked the bass for our debut record, as well as the current bass player for The TM Groove, regarded as one of the best event/cover bands in Romania. I'm also working with several artists in the CCM genre. I have a large variety of gear (9 basses, 30+ effects) at my home studio, so I can cover a lot of musical styles when you combine this with my technical capabilities.

I love finding the narrative of the bass guitar in any track and I thoroughly enjoy the recording process and everything that goes alongside it. I focus on providing the best and most appropriate sound and feel for the music at hand, and I am always open to suggestions, ideas, revisions, and so on. Your music deserves the best from my side and I strive to deliver on this front.

My ongoing experience as a web developer also allows me to approach every session in a very organized and methodical fashion, ensuring that I eliminate any needless distractions to focus on creating the best bass line for your music.

Interview with Dan Blaga

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I got the opportunity to participate as the bass player in a remix of the song Mireasma Noptii by the legendary Timisoara-based band Post Scriptum back in 2020. I worked alongside the original composer and to this day, that's the track I'm most proud of in terms of my playing, feeling, tone, small licks that I did, and so on. It was a case of everything clicking throughout the creative process and I have fond memories of working on that song.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Analog, it just has a certain warmth to it.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: The creative process itself.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: What are your expectations? What's the vibe you're looking for? Do you have anything in particular you'd want me to do (this can be in terms of techniques, playing, effects, etc)

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Communication is key. I like knowing exactly what you would like for me so that I can best cater to your preferences. Help me help you.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: My fretted Stingray 5, the Goliath preamp, the Lowrider, a Boss OC-2 and a huge amp behind me.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: I'm a very happy person and I feel that this translates into my playing as I put in a lot of energy, regardless of the genre and the simplicity of the line.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: Eli Soares. His music changed my style of playing for the better ever since I first heard him.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: I always try to play just behind the kick drum, I find that the entire song sounds much more spacious.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: I've worked on jazz-fusion, contemporary Christian music, rock, funk, R&B, etc.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: The ability to quickly learn a song and commit it to my musical memory.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: Open ears and paying attention. I like to find the thread where the bass fits inside the song, and I tend to latch onto various rhythmic and melodic elements that grab my ear.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: Load the song into the DAW, create the song structure map with markers, figure out the changes, assemble the bass line part by part and then put it all together. I like to make sure that there are as few edits as possible, because I enjoy making sure that the artist can hear a complete performance, so that nothing feels disjointed.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: I use a small dedicated recording board featuring the ZeroFiveAudio Lowrider (pedal that replicates the Pulltec trick), an Empress Bass Compressor and the Goliath Tube Bass Preamp. From there, I go straight into a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 interface and I use Reaper as my DAW.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: I have a special appreciation for Pino Palladino, as he has undoubtedly had the biggest influence on my playing. I also love Jaco Pastorius, Junior Braguinha, Joe Dart, Michael League, Bryan Beller, Tim Commerford, the list can go on.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: I record bass for whoever needs me.
