Cherub-im on SoundBetter

Cambridge music graduate and professional vocalist with close to 20 years' experience. Credits include stage (UK & international), and national radio & television (BBC, ITV, and channels in Morocco & France). Main genres are jazz, classical, musicals, folk & pop, but I'm always keen to collaborate with musicians and producers from other genres.

Hi! I'm Cherub-im & I trained as a classical soprano (DipABRSM), jazz singer & arranger with some of the top institutions & mentors in the UK (including recipients of Jazz FM awards & Emmys).

As a composition graduate & chorister, I'm an expert in complex, lush harmonies & surprising vocal arrangements. I specialise in sweet, angelic classical sounds & smokey, playful jazz. Have a listen to my voice reel to get a feel for what I can do, but don't hesitate to challenge me with something off-the-wall too!

I've previously recorded with professional producers, but now I have my own home set up. I use a Rode NT-2A mic & protools.

Interview with Cherub-im

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Two of my own albums! I'm hoping to release them in 2025. One is a jazz album I've been working on for the past couple of years and is ready to record, and the other is a gothic pop album based on myths and legends...

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I'll always do my best for your project. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I don't like sending something if I think I can do a better version.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I started out singing pop and jazz, but at 14 I went for classical music lessons and for the next few years that was my life - I was in multiple choirs and studied music at the University of Cambridge. I even thought about studying opera as a postgrad. In the end, I ended up going to drama school and then worked as a musical theatre actress/actor-musician. I've had to pick up a lot of different instruments and styles of playing!

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Set your gain before you get carried away - there's nothing worse than an incredible but unusable take because you forgot to adjust the gain levels before you moved on to the big chorus.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: In my spare time, I'm now mostly doing jazz and traditional folk, but I do sometimes dip my toe back into classical, and I'm starting to explore pop.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: I have a very big range and a very good ear for harmonies.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: I've been trained in several different styles, so I can bring a lot of different tones and vibes to a recording. Sometimes a record needs soft and airy backing vocals, a strong and clear lead, and a sultry, smokey lower part going on in the background - I can provide all of that in one place.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: It's all about what the client wants. I'll listen to the stems and any references, read the comments thoroughly, and try to come up with a quick rough draft to make sure I'm on the right lines. Once that's approved I dive in proper and layer vocals as I go.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: I use an M1 MacBook Pro, Komplete Audio 2, Protools, and a Rode NT2-A

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: I love Blossom Dearie - her songs and arrangements of jazz standards are always delightful! I also studied harmony and counterpoint at Cambridge, and I've always enjoyed the horizontal composition style of the early baroque period. I try and hold back and keep it simple for pop, but I do love letting loose and going where the emotion takes me with harmony parts.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: I'm just starting out in the world of recording at home, but previously I've composed for theatre and lent my vocals to CDs, TV shows, radio broadcasts, theatre productions and concerts both as a soloist and soprano chorister.
