Q: What's your typical work process?

A: These days I use a hybrid mixing technique somewhere between the Brauer technique (ABCD + vocal) and the top-down mixing method. Basically I make extensive use of sub-groups and buses and I use a lot (but also update often) my template. I like this method because I think it adds compactness and definition to my mixes. My template consists of 2 main groups: (1) all vocals (2) instrumental. This second bus includes all the main sub-buses, namely: drum and bass, guitars, transient materials (synths, impacts, hits) and keyboards, pads with reverbs, delays and various ambiences. My first move when I start a mix is to sort all the tracks into the correct sub-bus, applying a first dose of color and general compression. The second move is to check sound editing and phase, and if needed apply filters and correct resonances. Third step: creative mixing.
