Interview with Kyle Heese
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The Killerellik EP. I was involved in the songwriter process playing bass and programming drums. I also recorded everything, mixed and mastered the whole project. Was a lot of fun!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Mixing & mastering several projects and in the middle of a new studio room build
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. It's so much more cost effective and the technology is so advanced now that the analog modelled plugins are so close to the original analog gear that the average person will never notice the difference. I can pick up my studio and move it anywhere I want without needing a semi trailer and several people to haul huge consoles and gear. This means I can record anywhere if required
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to achieve the highest quality possible and work with you until you're happy. The project isn't finished until you're completely satisfied!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: working with artists to achieve their dreams. Seeing them light up after hearing their sweat and tears come through the monitors after working for so long to write that special song
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What bands have you worked with? Go to my website www.prowavestudios.com to see a sample of a few of my mixes
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That we use hundreds of plugins and are wizards that use our magic to mix your song. In reality the best mixing engineers use as few plugins as possible to achieve the best sound. If it doesn't need fixing then leave it alone. Less is more!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Plans for release(which platforms, etc.) Reference songs/bands they want their project to resemble as far as sound, quality, and levels What they are expecting of me?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Make sure you have a vision for your song or project. It makes it much easier for me to know what you're looking for from me if I know what your goals are with the project
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Guitar, Mac, interface, headphones, antelope edge solo mic
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Graduated from the Academy of Production & Recording Arts in 2006 and have been recording and mixing music ever since. Played in several bands and did some touring for a few years as well playing guitar, bass, and drums.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: clean and punchy
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Anyone who is kind and easy to work with
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Get it right at the source. Don't rely on mixing magic to fix it in the mix
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: All genres but mostly rock, country rock, pop, acoustic, metal
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Adapting to what the song needs to bring out the best in the artists' vision
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring over 15 years of experience mixing & mastering music of all genres. I work with the client to achieve the sound and quality that they require. Always up to a professional level competing with the best. Your song needs to stand out in clarity and tone.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Client sends me their multi-tracks to mix. I use mostly in the box plugins to achieve their desired sound often using analog modelled plugins to bring the sought after grit and warmth of analog hardware. Often the client gets me to master their song as well.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Mobile recording rig for tracking Pro Tools, Mixbus 32c, Antelope interface, Saffire Pro40, Voice Channel, Yamaha HS7 studio monitors, Slate VSX headphones Plugins: Slate, Waves, Antelope, Avid, Izotope, and more...
