Interview with Apollo Cosmo
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project that holds particular significance to me is my final project at Full Sail University. It marked a pivotal moment in my artistic journey, as I had the opportunity to create everything from scratch, meticulously sculpting each element to align with my vision. The project's success affirmed my growth as a musician and producer, showcasing my ability to translate abstract ideas into tangible musical expressions.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently, I'm fully immersed in the creation of my upcoming album, pouring my creative energies into crafting a body of work that reflects my artistic vision and growth.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I'm not personally acquainted with anyone on SoundBetter whom I could recommend at this time.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: While I appreciate the tactile experience of analog equipment in a larger studio setting, I find digital tools equally compelling for their versatility and portability. Ultimately, my preference is dictated by the context and specific requirements of each project.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to clients is unwavering support and dedication throughout the creative process. As long as they possess clarity regarding their artistic vision, I commit to assisting them in manifesting their musical aspirations to fruition.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I find immense satisfaction in the transformative power of music, reveling in the ability to breathe life into abstract ideas and emotions, thereby leaving an indelible mark on the fabric of human experience.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Customers often inquire about pricing and project timelines. In response, I encourage them to consider the significance of their artistic vision, emphasizing the importance of investing both financially and temporally in the realization of their creative goals.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: A common misconception is that as a producer, I undertake the entirety of the creative process alone. In reality, my role is to provide guidance, tools, and expertise, working in tandem with clients to realize their artistic vision collaboratively.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When engaging with potential clients, I inquire about their commitment level and sincerity in pursuing their artistic endeavors, ensuring alignment in our approach to the creative process.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I advise clients to arrive with a clear vision for their project. Clarity regarding artistic direction and goals serves as the foundation upon which we can collaboratively bring their musical vision to life.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: For maximum creative potential in isolation, I would prioritize essentials such as a laptop with a charger, a Condenser microphone, a versatile MIDI keyboard capable of emulating various instruments, and monitor speakers to ensure high-fidelity audio production.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My career trajectory has been rooted in a commitment to independent artistry, spanning approximately nine years of dedicated pursuit within the music industry.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style defies categorization, characterized by its eclectic nature and refusal to adhere to conventional genre constraints. I embrace a philosophy of "no style," allowing my creative impulses to flow freely across diverse musical landscapes.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: J. Cole stands out as my ideal collaborator due to our shared artistic sensibilities and spiritual perspectives. I believe our similar tonal pitch and thematic resonance would foster a truly harmonious creative partnership.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Before finalizing any beat or song, ask yourself a fundamental question: "Do I feel it?" Genuine emotional connection serves as the litmus test for the authenticity and potential impact of your creation.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I specialize primarily in Hip-Hop and Jazz genres, leveraging my expertise to deliver exceptional results within these stylistic realms.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My greatest strength lies in my ability to intuitively create melodies and harmonies tailored to the artist's style. I possess a keen understanding of vocal range, breath control, and artistic potential, allowing me to craft compositions that resonate profoundly with both the artist and the audience.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I infuse every song with soul power, emphasizing authenticity above all else. For me, music's essence lies in evoking genuine emotions; thus, I prioritize imbuing each composition with heartfelt sincerity.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Typically, I initiate the creative process by establishing the desired vibe or energy of the track, followed by determining the genre direction. My workflow often centers around crafting the chorus first, as it provides a solid foundation for subsequent elements such as verses, pre-choruses, breakdowns, or bridges.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: In my home studio setup, I aim for a professional yet comfortable environment. This includes a soundproofed walk-in closet booth, equipped with an AKG C214 Condenser microphone, HS3 Yamaha Monitors, and an array of live instruments such as an Acoustic Guitar, Electric Yamaha Piano, Flute, and Kalimba. For recording and production, I rely on a Scarlett Audio Interface paired with an Apple MacBook Pro.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My inspiration draws from a diverse pool of talents. At the forefront is J. Cole, not only for his musical prowess but also for his humility and the depth of his lyrical content. Additionally, producers like Pharrell, renowned for his exceptional melodic skills, J Dilla, celebrated for his masterful sampling techniques, and Quincy Jones, revered for his knack for creating chart-topping hits, all serve as significant sources of inspiration. Furthermore, while not a producer, Stevie Wonder's remarkable ear and ability to emulate various musical styles profoundly influence my approach to music.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Primarily, my work revolves around crafting melodic ideas for beats or lyrics, assisting with vocal mixing, and recording vocals for songs, particularly when clients send me beats and require my services as a vocalist
