Interview with Sarah Clanton
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am proud of all the work that I am a part of and accomplish as I try to put my best foot forward in all that I do. Its important for me to be proud of all the work with which my name is associated.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment I am releasing a self titled EP and preparing for a summer tour. While this is in the works I am also taking part in an electric string quartet called Synergy out of South Carolina and gearing up to audition to be entertainment on cruise ships around the world. Meanwhile here in Nashville I am always writing, co writing, and performing for and with others as a cellist for both shows and session work.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love that music is my job. From writing to singing to playing cello, I feel lucky that music is not only my passion but my livelihood.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: This question is hard....I would bring my cello, guitar, pens and loads of paper and something as simple as a voice memo app to record ideas. As long as I can sing and write, I would be happy.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I am an artist. I have played the cello for over 20 years and have been an active full time touring singer songwriter and performer since graduating college in 2006.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Vocally I would consider my style to be a sultry blues influenced singer songwriter rock. I have some grit backed by sweetness.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Communicate with your client. Knowing as best you can about what the goal of the project is allows creativity to flourish.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skills are vocal performance, cello performance and lyric writing.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Living in Nashville and being a touring artist allows me to be inspired by many different professionals from production, writing and performance wherever I go. There is not one in particular that inspires me the most, however, each time I am allowed to witness an amazing performance or studio session or writing experience, I learn something new that inspires me to push the boundaries of what I am able to creatively produce myself. I love rock and roll both traditionally speaking and from Led Zeppelin to Radiohead to songwriters such as Laura Marling or Kacey Musgraves, there is something to be learned from exposing oneself to a myriad of writing, performance and production style.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do for clients includes writing lyrics, melodies and cello melodies. Often times I write vocal or cello or string parts for songs that are already written, other times I write lyrics and melodies that turn into a new song all together. Clients provide ideas for subject and style and then with that input I am able to be creative in a direction that best fits the clients needs. Its a musical adventure that takes me to a new destination each time, and I love it!
