Cactus House Recording on SoundBetter

Meticulous digital editing meets analog mixing and mastering - I have been running my hybrid studio in San Jose for several years and have produced and published hundreds of songs for dozens of artists, let me help you on your musical journey!

My name is Trevor Gabriel. I built and run Cactus House Recording, a small studio with big sound in San Jose's historic New Almaden neighborhood. With almost two decades of experience as a touring musician, session guitarist and music teacher, I started recording my own projects and quickly became one of the go-to producers in my city.
I have curated, modded and built my own analog outboard gear, and am always experimenting with ways to improve my workflow and equipment. I have the capability to track full live bands and also handle large mix-downs with 16 In/Out dedicated hardware inserts for compressors, EQ and analog effects.
I would be honored if you check out my portfolio. If you like my sound and approach, let's make some music together!

Trevor has recording our band Dead Engine numerous times- and we only go here to record. He has an amazing ear, is incredibly knowledgeable about producing, and genuinely cares about the music that he works with. Could not recommend him enough!

Trevor recorded my band, Wounded Man on Trees full length album titled Lore. Not only did he know exactly what we were looking for, but he also put up with our antics while he helped us through the recording process. We were so stoked with his professionalism and also the killer recording studio that he has carefully instructed. The hardest thing about working with Trevor, if you're a gear head, is not ending up talking for a while about all his killer gear! We would absolutely suggest recording with Cactus House!

Trevor is an amazing person with a great passion for music and the process of recording. I've worked with him several times on different projects and it's always been a smooth and quick process. He's got a great amount of knowledge when it comes to his equipment and knows how to utilize every piece of his studio. Everything he uses is top notch and is always developing new ideas and techniques. Him being an active live and recording musician means he can relate with musicians coming into the studio with their wants and understands what they're talking about. The studio is super nice and comfy.

I came to Cactus House seeking to produce some original music for a video game I have in development. Trevor not only delivered, but knocked it out of the park. We talked about what kind of mood and narrative the music needed to set: I wanted a modern take on the kind of music that SEGA used to accompany their console and arcade games with. Trevor gave me this beautifully polished, full-blown, studio-grade original soundtrack that would rival the classics. No matter what style or genre your album or project requires, Cactus House has the musical chops, equipment, and technical prowess for you.

Not only is this man a great producer, he's also an amazing guitar player. The studio is top notch and if you need any extra help on a recording, he's got your back. Deep knowledge on the bay area music scene. I'd like to drop the top secret nickname but that'll cost ya.

Trevor is an outstanding individual when it comes to music. His knowledge and expertise greatly helped our EP and without his help we wouldn’t have been able to accomplish what we wanted to musically. He made us very welcome and invited and gave us in depth help with the aether we didn’t know beforehand. If I could give 6 stars I would.

Trevor at Cactus House Recording truly brought my vision of Dark Satellite to life. Recording with someone who has a passion for what they do is a game changer. Cactus House Recording is such a professional studio with great quality gear to use and a surplus of possibilities. Trevor sets up a professional environment and will do everything he can to help you achieve your goal. No one has motivated me more to continue my music career then Trevor. Whatever you're working on, you won’t be disappointed in what Cactus House Recording can make it.

Working with Trevor was an absolute delight! His studio setup is top-notch, and his exceptional attention to detail is truly remarkable. The recording experience for "Grace And The Grit" was not only seamless but also filled with immense enjoyment & inspiration. Trevor wholeheartedly embraced our vision, resulting in a final product that exceeded our wildest expectations. Throughout the process, we never felt rushed, as Trevor always ensured there was ample time and space for us to bring forth any additional creative ideas we had. We hope to work on more projects with Trevor in the future!

This is professional, quality service, all the way through. Trevor is a multi instrumentalist, performer and songwriter himself so he is especially attentive to the needs of the artists. He is also extremely generous and will do what it takes to get the job done right. I had a great experience having him remaster my album (Geardagum by Karmic Ashes) and upload it to Spotify (something I would have had a very hard time doing myself).

Interview with Cactus House Recording

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: That I will do my best and not compromise on their music. A lot of my clients have had bad experiences with other producers who just didn't care about the music. No matter the genre (or skill level) I will always do my best to make the song sound as good as possible.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: Meeting talented creative people. I am inspired by a lot of the people who choose to work with me and that's a big part of what makes being a recording engineer so great!

  5. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  6. A: "Can you give us a discount?" My answer is usually "yes...but" since I am more than happy to work within people's budgets but the client needs to understand that I already charge under the competition and I will only lower my rate for them if they are truly in need.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: That all I do every day is listen to music haha Running a studio by myself means a lot of the time I'm in the workshop building acoustic materials, soldering a repair or mod on an amp, cutting cables, updating my website etc But it's all part of the process and worth it considering that it's all for the greater goal of producing music full time!

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: I always like to ask what albums the artists are listening to, even if it is in a different genre than their original music. This is often the best way to figure out the mix balance, stereo image or general vibe the client wants for their own recordings.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: An 1176 compressor, Pultec EQ, 1073 preamp, Rickenbacker 4003s bass, and my Martin steel string acoustic.

  13. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  14. A: My band Dark Satellite's album Death of a Classic! I wrote, sang, and played bass, guitar and keys all over this album. I also mixed and mastered the album and even edited our music video for the title track. It was a labor of love that has been getting great feedback and is now available to purchase from Alternative Tentacles (one of my favorite labels)!

  15. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  16. A: Both but specifically in mix-down I use as much of my outboard gear as possible, I find that my hardware Pultecs for example do actually sound better than the digital emulations, and as a bonus using outboard gear takes strain off the computer's CPU!

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Listen through the portfolios of the providers and honestly go with your gut, music is about invoking a feeling so if a certain mix grabs you then go with your instincts!

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I've been a guitar teacher and touring session guitarist for almost 20 years but started recording professionally five years ago.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Analog warmth with precision digital editing and subtle vocal tuning.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: Don't overly process, edit or effect live tracks. In a world of quantized drums, tuned vocals and DI-to-plugin guitars people want to hear authenticity.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: Usually rock, pop rock, singer-songwriter and occasionally R&B.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Either tracking guitar / drums / bass or mixing a live band. This comes from two decades of being a touring guitarist and teacher, but also running live sound for bands.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: Wether it's a song I wrote, played on or recorded, I bring my all. I find there is no one-size-fits-all in music production, so I always take the extra time to listen and experiment with how to best bring out the unique character of each song.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: Most of the time bands will book time and pay through my website, then after recording I mix in three phases - draft, revision, and final. Before sending out the final mixes I will send an invoice for the mixing costs. I also offer the option to distribute to streaming for my clients at no extra charge.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: My studio is a renovated miner's cabin from the 1890s. I built sound panels, bass traps, acrylic panels for the windows and installed two heavy steel doors for acoustic design. My studio also consists of two large racks of outboard gear, as well as high quality amps, instruments, and a 1970s Ludwig Vistalite kit that is always set up and miked!

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: Steven Wilson, Steve Albini, Esperanza Spalding and Frank Zappa just to name a few.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: I mostly provide live tracking, analog mixing and mastering for my clients. I also routinely play as a session guitarist or bassist on other people's projects.
