Elizabeth has been coming to a songwriters group I facilitate for over a year now, and I am absolutely blown away by each new song and sound she brings. The emotional and intellectual depth of her lyrics is enhanced by her vocal and musical arrangements so that the listener is drawn in to more of an experience than a song. She is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside - but beneath that calm, soothing speaking voice is a dangerously accurate poet with supernatural disarming abilities. I highly recommend her -as an artist and a person.

Interview with Elizabeth Marrero

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I had the honor of creating and leading a theatrical production for Christmas at a church. It was set on old Jerusalem and was completely told through dance, music, and rap. I loved researching the style of music and writing with it, incorporating Hebrew as well. It was such a moving production that most viewers were moved to tears the entire time.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am writing songs to go with our Easter theme at my church.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Kris Bradley is an amazing topliner. She referred me to this site.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I enjoy the nostalgic connection with analog but can appreciate the quality of digital.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I can't listen to what's playing in your head but I promise to work with you to get it as close as possible lyrically.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I very much enjoy singing/songwriting so it's amazing just to be able to do it as a whole.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Pricing and copyright questions are most common. I've taken copyright courses so I've studied into this and also have my pricing listed clearly. I also don't mind helping with any questions that will help build a trusting working relationship.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That it takes a good while to do. I usually write within a day or two.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask what do you want the listener to walk away feeling. Where do you imagine this song being played or during what occasion in their lives. Do you have a deadline? Do you have a reference track?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I would say you know your project best and what you want it to sound like. Find someone who matches that style or can replicate it with a good work ethic and go for it.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: I imagine there's no electricity in a deserted island so just my acoustic piano would be fine =)

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I come from a musical family so I grew up with a mic in hand and piano in the house. I started writing songs 25 years ago at the age of 15 and about a year later, I was hired by a soundtrack company to translate some of the biggest songs in the Christian industry at that time and do vocals for them. After I graduated high school, I recorded my demo and have been working on various studio projects, doing lead or back up vocals for various live performances or studio projects, and writing songs for others.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style with lyrics are deep and introspective. My vocal style is soft and restful.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: My dream artist to work with would be Alicia Keys because of her songwriting, piano, and studio skills. I could learn a lot!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: I've found the songs that I don't think much of or didn't work on a lot are the ones people gravitate most to so, keep it fun and light!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop with different fusions mixed in

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Songwriting and vocals

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a perspective that, although not scared of exploring deep or tough topics, always bring a positive, inspirational aspect to it for the listener to walk away refreshed and motivated.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: When I receive an assignment, I ensure all instructions are clear to me and ask any questions needed (deadline, reference track, etc). Then I begin by writing a good hook. From there, the rest of the song flows through pretty smooth.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have an acoustic upright piano and Scarlet studio equipment (CM25 MkIII condenser microphone, 2i2 interface, SH-450 headphones)

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Artists that get in the studio themselves to create their own sound inspire me, such as Alicia Keys and Taylor Swift.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Songwriting, creating custom songs
