Interview with Amber Robinson
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’m proud of my first arranging project completed here in LA. I had just moved 6 months prior and created 5 live arrangements for a Juneteenth show. It was very fun building the show from the ground up with the artist!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently working on 5 singles for various R&B artists! Stay tuned for the Spring!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Kevin Randolph is a phenomenal producer, arranger and mentor of mine!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to give my best effort on every project!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I get to make things from thin air that no one will ever see, but they will feel as long as they can hear!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How does the revision process work? - I’ll present/submit the song/instrumental - We schedule a 30-min call to share notes and requests. -Once changes are agreed upon in session, I’ll make the edits!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Biggest misconception is that I perform all the compositions. While I mostly perform all instruments live, I will call on session players to record over my demos.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do you have any song/artist references? What is your turnaround time/budget? What inspired this project? Where would you like to hear your music performed/placed?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Leave nothing creatively out of conversation!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Midi controller, Sm7B, Interface, MacBook Pro, Power Generator
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I began my career in 2009 as a musician, playing on tours and in concert bands! Over the last 3 years, I’ve been focusing more in the recording studio and have been able to create some great projects!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is very rhythm forward, and energetic!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with Jon Batiste! He’s determined to create works that transcend genre and that’s a mission I’d love to share part in.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t overthink it!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily produce R&B and Hip-Hop music, though Gospel and Indie are also in my wheelhouse.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is the ability to keep the live performance of the song in mind.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I aim to bring exactly what the song calls for: whether that be a stripped down arrangement, or a full orchestra with heavy hitting drums and effects.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical process begins with a conversation with the artist; getting to know their sonic palette is critical. Once that’s done, I’ll begin composing the perfect track to accompany the artist’s initial concept. We’ll review and I’ll make any necessary adjustments from there!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I maintain a very intimate setup of my Komplete Kontrol S61, MacBook Pro stocked with a plethora of third-party plugins, SM7B, and Apollo Twin MkII interface. When feeling extra inspired, I’ll use my Yamaha Montage and Roland Fantom to run additional synths and textures!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Major influences are Missy Elliot, Kanye West, and PJ Morton!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most commonly producing Hip-Hop and R&B instrumentals to indie artists and songwriters.
