Interview with SOAYAWRITES
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m especially proud of is working with a producer called NIOW. I absolutely love his sound, and from the start, it felt really natural to create with him. We seemed to share the same vision and emotional feel for the songs, which made the writing and recording process flow really easily. I worked on two tracks for him, Fly Away and Selfish Love, both of which are linked on my profile. They ended up getting signed to Gahara, which I’m really grateful for, and it’s been so nice to see them doing well.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now, I’m working on a mix of client projects through my vocal and songwriting service, Soaya. I’ve been collaborating with producers on everything from toplines to full vocal recordings, and it’s been really rewarding to help bring different songs to life in a way that feels genuine and emotional. I love being part of that behind-the-scenes process. At the same time, I’m focusing on my artist project, BYANCA. I have a few songs I’ll be releasing soon, and I’ve been working on content and visuals to go with them, including some music videos. It’s been a nice balance—supporting other artists while also creating space for my own music and growth.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes, I know Rory Hope and would definitely recommend him. He’s incredibly talented and professional, and I’ve seen the care he puts into every project. If a client is looking for strong male vocals or songwriting, he’s someone I trust to deliver quality work—and I truly believe he has a big future ahead of him.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, mainly because it gives me the flexibility and speed I need to work from my home studio. It allows me to experiment with ideas, record multiple takes, and stay in flow without worrying about setup limitations. That said, I love when digital tools can bring in that analog warmth—like the Volt 276’s built-in compression. It’s the best of both worlds.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to treat every project with care, professionalism, and intention. I’ll always listen closely to what the client wants, communicate clearly, and deliver high-quality vocals that feel emotionally connected and true to the vision. Whether it’s a small idea or a fully developed track, I’m committed to making sure the final result feels right and that the client walks away happy with what we created together.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most is that I get to do what I love every day—writing, singing, and connecting with people through music. There’s something really special about turning someone’s vision or emotion into a finished song they’re proud of. Whether it's for my own project or for someone else’s, being part of that creative process never gets old.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Clients often ask, “How quickly can you deliver?” I usually say within 3 to 5 days, depending on the project’s complexity and my current schedule. I always try to be realistic with timelines because I want to deliver quality work without rushing the creative process. If there’s a tighter deadline, I’m open to discussing that too—communication is key.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One of the biggest misconceptions is that vocalists just sing and send a file. In reality, there’s so much thought and intention that goes into every part of the process—interpreting the emotion, shaping melodies, delivering the right tone, recording clean takes, stacking harmonies, and making sure everything feels cohesive. It’s not just about sounding good, it’s about serving the song and helping bring someone else’s vision to life.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually start by asking what kind of sound or emotion they're going for. I’ll ask for reference tracks, vocal tone preferences, and whether they have lyrics or need help with writing. I also like to know if they want full vocal production like harmonies, doubles, and adlibs, or just a lead vocal. If it's for release, I check if it’s a buyout or if they plan to credit me. Clarity upfront helps make the process smooth and collaborative.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be as clear as possible about your vision, even if you don’t have all the technical terms. Whether it’s a reference track, a mood, or just a few keywords, anything helps me understand what you're looking for. Also, trust the process. Giving your provider a bit of creative space usually leads to the best results. And lastly, don’t be afraid to communicate. This is a collaboration, and I want the final product to feel right for you.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1. My guitar – it’s where most of my songs start, and I can’t imagine writing without it. 2. Shure SM7B – it captures the softness and detail in my voice perfectly. 3. Universal Audio Volt 276 – love the warmth and gentle compression it gives. 4. My MacBook with Logic Pro – my go-to DAW for recording and arranging. 5. A great pair of headphones – essential if I’m finishing songs under a palm tree.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started out as an artist under the name BYANCA, which is still my main project today. About two years ago, I began writing and recording for other artists and producers on the side—and I quickly realized how much I loved the collaborative process. It felt natural, and I knew I wanted to do it full-time. As both sides of my career started to grow, I decided to separate the two paths to keep things clear and focused. BYANCA is where I pour my heart into my own music and storytelling, while Soaya is the name I use for ghostwriting, recording vocals for hire, and collaborating behind the scenes. It’s been the best of both worlds—building my artist brand while also supporting others in bringing their vision to life.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is soft, introspective, and emotionally driven. It’s a mix of vulnerable storytelling and subtle strength—somewhere between Gracie Abrams’ intimacy, Taylor Swift’s lyricism, and Tate McRae’s edge. Whether I’m singing over a stripped guitar or a dreamy pop production, I try to keep everything honest, melodic, and connected to the heart of the song.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with Gracie Abrams. There’s something so raw and intimate about the way she writes and delivers her vocals—it feels like you’re being let in on a secret. I really connect with that kind of emotional honesty, and I think our styles would blend in a way that feels both vulnerable and cinematic.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: From a singer’s perspective: less is more. Leave space for the vocal to breathe—especially in verses. Sometimes the most emotional moments come through when the production holds back just enough to let the lyrics and delivery take the lead. Creating that dynamic contrast makes the full song feel more impactful.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work across a variety of genres, but my main focus is pop, EDM, and chill house.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Probably melodies—coming up with emotionally engaging, memorable toplines is something that feels really natural to me. I love exploring different melodic directions until something clicks and feels like it belongs to the track. That said, songwriting and vocal performance are also huge parts of what I do. I put a lot of care into lyrics and phrasing, and I always aim to deliver vocals that feel honest and connected. But if I had to pick just one strength, it would definitely be creating melodies that stick with you.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring emotion, intention, and clarity to a song. Whether it’s a vulnerable ballad or a fresh, dreamy pop track, I focus on delivering vocals that feel real and connected. My tone leans soft and expressive, and I pay close attention to dynamics and phrasing to make sure the performance supports the story. Beyond just singing, I aim to elevate the song—adding harmonies, layers, and textures that give it depth without overpowering the core emotion.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process always starts with understanding the client’s vision—whether that comes from a demo, a reference track, or simply the mood they want to create. From there, I record the lead vocals and build out the full arrangement with harmonies, doubles, and adlibs as needed. I make sure everything is captured cleanly and sounds clear, warm, and professional. Once the performances are finalized, I deliver high-quality stems and include revisions to ensure the final result feels exactly right.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: work out of a fully soundproofed home studio that’s set up for studio-grade vocal recording. I use a Shure SM7B microphone paired with the Universal Audio Volt 276 interface, which adds a warm, controlled character to my vocals thanks to its built-in analog compression. My DAW is Logic Pro, and I monitor using Alctron speakers for a clear, balanced sound. The space is acoustically treated to eliminate unwanted reflections, allowing me to deliver clean, industry-ready vocal stems—whether it’s leads, doubles, harmonies, or detailed adlibs.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m really inspired by artists like Gracie Abrams, Taylor Swift, Tate McRae, and Jessica Baio—women who write from the heart and aren’t afraid to be soft and strong. Vocally and lyrically, they’ve shaped the way I approach storytelling in music. On the production side, I absolutely admire David Burris and Darius Henry for the way they build emotional worlds within their tracks. Their attention to detail and ability to highlight the vocal is something I deeply resonate with.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do for clients is providing professionally recorded vocals—either covers or original toplines—tailored to fit their production. Whether it's a soft, emotional ballad or a fresh pop track, I focus on delivering clean, heartfelt vocals that elevate the song and match the vibe they’re going for. Many clients come to me for full vocal packages, including leads, harmonies, adlibs.
