Interview with Sher Made It
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One of the big works of which I am proud is the music for the film “Super Manager or the Hoe of Fate”, with the participation of super stars from the CIS countries.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I will put my soul into Every Note.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I am completely absorbed in the process, in all stages, from the beginning of creation to finalization. I love music and everything related to it!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Why isn't my music selling? Because you don't have an overall strategy and step-by-step plan for the next two years.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do you have a concept? Key message of the project. Who is your target audience? Name the 3 most similar world-class artists.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Never save on professionals if you want to make a real business.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working on several music projects for artists from America and Europe.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I just started here, I don’t know yet, but I see that there are a lot of professionals here and this place is perfect for me.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Definitely digital! I had all the iconic analog gear. I had everything a “maniacal sound engineer” could dream of. But one day my colleagues and I conducted a blind test, comparing Teletronix LA-2A and its emulation from UAD. None of us could accurately guess where the signal was processed by an analog device, and where digital. In a similar way, we tested a whole pile of hardware and my world turned upside down. Since then, the choice, for a million reasons (led by the possibility of automation), is obvious to me!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Change a few sounds, add delays and reverb, do an amazing mix and this track will become a hit.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been making music since 1996. I started out as a rapper, making music and mixing it for my band. The hobby grew into a professional career. For several years I was the head of an FM radio station. Afterwards I opened my first recording studio. My professional experience is more than 20 years, 15 of which I work as a producer with big artists.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Powerful energy, fresh sound and epicness.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with Rag'N'Bone Man. He is very close to me in spirit - I love the combination of strength and depth.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't take the process too seriously - have maximum fun!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on POP and HIP-HOP projects.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have an exceptional sense of music. Combining this with extensive marketing knowledge and experience working with major artists and labels, I help turn a hobby into a profitable business.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I am a producer so I always dive deep into production to achieve the best result. I always say directly when I think that sounds are better replaced. Most of my clients, when sending a track for mixing, immediately send the midi as well. I also always ask customers to send me both DRY and WET sounds.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Most often I work on projects from scratch (or demo) right through to mastering.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio has all the necessary equipment to create a product that meets world quality standards. I consider the primary factor influencing the quality of work to be a correctly implemented acoustic space that excludes resonances but is not devoid of “air.” I have a unique control room in which an exclusive AUGSPURGER far-field monitor acoustic system is installed and I trust the Focal Trio11 reference monitors for sound. I like to switch to different sensors, so I also use Yamaha HS, Avantone MIXCUBE and beyerdynamic dt 880 edition headphones for work. I mix on SSL Duality Fuse, as it perfectly combines the famous modern-analog sound with the amazing DAW controller. As a converter I use SSL Alpha Link MADI AX, AVID Pro Tools HDX. I use plugins: Universal Audio, Waves, AVID, SSL, FabFilter, Izotope, OekSound, Celemony, Plugin Alliance, Soundtoys, CableGuys, SIR Audio Tools, Acustica Audio, ValhallaDSP. I use Cubase 13 as a host application. Computer MAC PRO 2017.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: As producers I like: Calvin Harris - for his multi-genre versatility and exceptional taste; Skrillex - for inexhaustible ingenuity and powerful energy; Sia - for epicness, beauty and depth.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most often I do the full production of a track, including vocal production, mixing and mastering.
