Interview with Brandon Fillette
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Any artist interested in making music. I love music and don't care what stage or level of fame an artist is at. It should be about the music.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Tempo map and quantitize (to taste). It will save you hours of messing with grids if you know your tempos and get them right at the start.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Musical Theater. But I dabble in everything (Pop, Rock, R&B, Classical, Electronic)
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I am quick. I've spent a long time working on my skills to make sure I don't spend so much time setting things up or correcting mistakes. I don't waste time trying to make something work that doesn't. Time is money and I respect people's time.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: 'Creative noodles'. I am generative in my creativity. My collaborators find that I have many ideas (and some of them are great). I don't hold back and will try anything multiple times to see what works best for the song. I have an extensive music theory background as well to help with compositional technique. I employ professionalism in every session to best serve the artist's needs for their piece.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depending on the project, I assess big-picture needs and address issues before they happen. I always prep a session before we start and gather information from the client to make sure we have the same vision. I love tempo mapping. I love arranging the song, knowing the form, and creating shapes from there.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a vocal booth, keyboard setup into my MacBook, 4 speakers (KRK Rokits, two off-brand speakers for high end), multiple pairs of headphones, and an audio interface to run everything.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Dan Nigro, Jack Antonoff, Alex Lacimore, Michael Starobin, Mike Dean, Ian Kaegy, Brian Usifer
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Vocal recording, Piano tracks, Demos, Arrangements, Mock-ups, Mixing
