Dopest mix I ever gotten for a budget as small as mine. I will definitely be using them again.

Interview with YelaBoi Phil Jackson

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I would have to say my own project "The Codeine Effect". I'm proud of the project because I wrote, produced, recorded and engineered the entire project.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A diamond records project called "Survival Mode" which is an EP featuring artist Wizzy Bands and Thevoiceofbaltimore.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes. "Nate middleman" of above ground studios. He's an amazing engineer.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. Some Digital gear can never give you the sound of some analog gear. Just like there's no program with 808s that hit harder then FL11.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: You'll love what you hear.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The Music

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Are my services expensive. And my response to that is I work with ANY BUDGET BIG OR SMALL.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: My knowledge of the music business. See, because I don't boast about who I worked with or my awards most people think I have no clue what I'm talking about. I've made history with some of the best artist you hear today.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What are you looking for? What's your budget? How soon do you need this done?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be sure that you know exactly what you are looking for. Finding your sound could lead you to be an entirely different artist.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Macbook pro, Apollo solo interface, AT-2020 microphone, tascam tm3 headphones, Akai mpk249 keyboard.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: My career path was to be an artist but, trying to get my music properly mixed was very hard and very expensive. We didn't have tutorials on YouTube or distrokid for distribution. We had to sit outside of concerts and restaurants trying to pass off our demos or mixtapes to the major artist as they were leaving or going to the local radio station trying to pitch a song to get airplay. So it eventually lead me to learning the art of engineering on my own.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: A mixture of everything since the late 90s to now.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would have had loved the chance to work with NATE DOG. His sound is a sound I've been chasing my whole life. Not his exact sound but an extremely unmatched unique sound of which he had.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Yes. Don't use autotune for musicians that do not need it, instead try using a Subtractive EQ followed by a pitch correction. You must make sure your are in the proper key.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: R&B it has more depth and feeling and it's easier for it to draw me in.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill has to be mixing I just have a tremendous ear for it and I do not know music theory. Figure that one out LOL.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: "LIFE"

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Record, Clean, Mix, Master. That's the process day in day out.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Well I've always been inspired by warm audio and audio technica. I actually still have the very same AT-2020 I did in my aunt's basement using her linen closet as a booth LOL. At this moment I have my Neumann tl-103 running thru a Scarlett 18i20 audio interface that runs through my Samson c-control that powers both of my Kali audio LP-8s and my Yamaha HS5s.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: IRKO inspires me the most. His talent for mixing is impeccable. I actually follow the very same chain as he does

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Audio Recording and Mixing. I have a god giving ear for good sound. With my experience as an artist as long as a engineer I put the 2 together and I'm unstoppable.
