Tinashe Munyaka

Emotive Songwriter

Tinashe Munyaka on SoundBetter

I'm Tinashe, a lover of music. I love all genres of music, well, mostly :) I have a strong passion for music, from the beat, arrangement, the lyrics and the emotion that a song brings. I have grown from writing and producing songs, to purely conceptualising and writing songs. I love telling stories with lyrics. That is my happy place.

My name is Tinashe, with over 20yrs experience in music production. My experience has exposed me to different genres, as well as different parts of music production. I've been an executive producer, artist, beat-maker, a song-writer, to name but all... but my passion now lays in songwriting.

I offer songwriting as a primary service. I am also keen and I would love to explore concepts and ideas with others, basically song ideation. I work really well on my own and love to pitch and/or present ideas to others. If you have an idea I can help bring it to life, with lyrics and a potential beat that goes with it. I cannot sing, but I also provide rough ideas of hooks and melodies through rough recordings.

I have worked with various artists internationally, singers and producers, and I am looking to grow further into my career.

Interview with Tinashe Munyaka

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I executive produced an album for one of the top and award-winning producers in Zimbabwe. It was a break-away multi-genre project to showcase his production skills. I conceptualised the album, selected the genres for production, wrote some of the songs and identified the right artists and singers to work with.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A personal album I’ve been writing for a while now.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I know I will meet their needs.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: Being creative and the ability to tell stories through music.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That words are just words.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What message are you trying to portray through the song? Is it part of a larger production that needs to fit into a particular theme?

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Let’s have a discussion first, so you can get to see what I could potentially bring to your project.

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I grew up in a home from where my mother would always have music playing, from ABBA to Phil Collins, Dolly Parton and all the artists from that era. My elder brothers were into singing and writing music in my teen years, that’s where I also gained my basic skills and later on I learned music production and I’ve just grown into loving writing music and conceptualising songs. It’s been a +20yr journey so far.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: I’m an emotive writer.

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: Zonke, I am intrigued by the lyrics she writes and the emotion they show and also how she puts them across when she sings.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: After initial recording, simmer on the song for a few days or weeks and see what other bits and pieces you can add in, whether be it ad-libs or any other small bits that can truly enhance the song in the smallest possible way.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: I love working on music that deal with emotions, whether heartbreak or joy.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: Feeling a song and knowing what to write to it.

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: Captivating emotive lyrics, firstly, and also the direction of the song.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: If I’m conceptualising, I’m busy listening to instrumentals and digging through lyrics and melodies that fit the song, that’s if I am not writing from scratch. If I’m writing from scratch, I’m thinking of life experiences I’ve either experienced or seen or imagine to better tell the story of the song.

  31. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  32. A: Singers inspire me the most.

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: I help bring song ideas to life through conceptualising and writing songs.
