Interview with Jim Wes

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: Less is always more!

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: Currently, hiphop/pop.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: Streamlined organization.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: I literally bring everything I can to a song so that it can accomplish its goal. If the song is to be the most commercial, I make sure the hook is right the mix is right the drop is right the lifts are right. If the song is meant to be an album cut, I maximize the cool factor and make sure its as cool as possible.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: I find it more streamline to topline to a near finished track, so I usually start there. After the topline, I layer in all live instruments.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: I am endorsed by Microtech Geffell so my main vocal mic is the M930 Ts. Universal audio 610 for my main pre. And then the apogee duet for the a/d. 1 large live room for drums, percussion, and auxiliary, iso booths for guitars. My DAW is Logic.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: The greats to me are: Dre, Pharrell, Kanye, Timbo, Max Martin, Dr. Luke ..etc.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: I cowrite with the artist, then produce the song top to bottom. Kind of a one-stop-shop for singles!
