Interview with FEQ
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I do prefer the analog way, but I work with a combination of analog and digital equipment because each has its advantages. Analog can add unique warmth and character to the sound, while digital offers flexibility and efficiency in the production process.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One of the biggest misconceptions about my work is believing that one can understand a science without studying.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Some questions I typically ask potential clients include: Do you already have a specific idea for your music, or are you open to suggestions and creative collaboration? Do you have any musical or artistic references you would like to share to help define the sound you are aiming for? What is your timeline for this music production, and do you have any budget constraints?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice would be for the client to seek a provider who not only has solid technical skills but also is able to understand and collaborate with their artistic vision.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I were on a desert island, I would bring a computer, MIDI controller, pair of headphones, audio monitors, and a power generator to power everything, as they would allow me to continue producing music even in adverse circumstances.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I began my career in the music industry 9 years ago, initially working as a DJ and composer. Over time, I honed my skills and specialized in music production and engineering.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is characterized by ambiance, hard-hitting beats, balance, and distribution of elements within your song.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Jorja Smith because of her unique sonic identity that I greatly admire, and because it would be an extremely rewarding project for me.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: An interesting tip for music production is Parallel Compression for Drums.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work across a variety of musical genres, including R&B, Trap Soul, Brazilian Funk, Pop, etc. I'm always open to exploring new styles and musical challenges.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is understanding and arranging all elements within the mix, allowing the music to hit hard on any sound system.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring my technical and creative expertise to elevate the music to its fullest potential, whether through smart arrangements, precise mixing, or creative suggestions.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process typically starts with a meeting with the client to understand their vision and goals. From there, we go through pre-production, recording, mixing, and mastering, ensuring that each step meets the client's expectations.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is equipped with KRK audio monitors, a 61-key MIDI controller, a Scarlett 3rd gen 8i6 interface, and a state-of-the-art computer. I maintain an acoustically treated environment to ensure high-quality recordings, clean mixing, and efficient workflow.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Some of the professionals who inspire me include Don Toliver, Post Malone, and Mike Dean. I admire their technical skills, creativity, and contributions to the music industry.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: As a music producer and engineer, my main job is to assist artists in realizing their sonic vision. This involves everything from pre-production, where we help develop arrangements and select sounds, to recording, mixing, and final mastering.
