Mix Engineer: Studio & FOH

Luke Otten on SoundBetter

Half price special! I offer mixing services for both live and recorded audio.

Hi, my name is Luke! I've been mixing front of house for small to medium venues and houses of worship since 2012 and have mixed recorded music as well.
I'm currently offering mixing services for both live events (within the Orlando area) and recorded music.

I'm currently working on building my portfolio for studio mixes, so I'm offering a half-price special as a thank you to anyone who is willing to let me use my work with them as an example in my portfolio.

I will do my best to help you achieve your artistic vision but if for some reason you aren't satisfied with my studio mixing work, you'll get a full refund.

Thanks to Jeff Hirata for allowing me to share with you my unofficial mix of his song Sunshine! You can find more of his work here:

Interview with Luke Otten

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: It depends

  3. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  4. A: Currently, the most common work I do is mixing live audio for small venues. I also do some studio mixing as well.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: My first goal is to understand my client's vision for the project. From there I will start working on a rough mix, getting levels roughly balanced and starting to determine where each track should sit in the mix. Here, it is important to determine what carry's the groove of the song, to make sure that gets special attention. From here it is a fairly organic process of adjusting EQ, compression, and other parameters to help shape the sound of each track to fit in its own space and in relation to everything else. As things start to sound more balanced, I might start experimenting with various effects to help glue things together and give the song a sense of space. After that I'll send the mix to the client for the first review. I'll make any revisions as indicated by the client until the client is satisfied. (Usually up to three revisions, though it doesn't typically require that many). For live mixing situations, (if I'm able to accept the job) I will also start with getting an idea of the kind of sound that the client wants. If they have some recorded material, I will listen to that, or ask for any similar sounding artists for reference. I will also work with the client on an input list for the show, and learn some more about their chosen venue and what equipment will be available (whether equipment will be provided by the venue, or owned or rented by the client). If possible I like to visit the venue before hand to get an idea of what the environment will be like. On the day of the show, I like to show up early and lend a hand with any equipment set up that is needed. My sound checks usually consist of a brief line check to set initial gain levels and ensure everything is working properly. If there is a drum kit, I like to also set initial compression settings at this point. From there I will ask the band to play through a song or two and get the rest of the mix dialed in. I'll check in to see if there is anything else the client needs. If there is time to go through the whole set, that is usually preferred, but not always possible or practical. Then comes showtime, where I will continue to make adjustments as needed, though usually more subtle. I'm usually willing to stick around afterward and help pack up.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I will do my best to achieve the sound you are looking for, but if for some reason you aren't satisfied with the result, I won't charge you.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: That moment when everything clicks together in a mix and you can feel the energy in the room.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: I'm a problem solver. I do well with understanding problems and realizing solutions. I'm quick to adapt to new challenges.

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I've been mixing front of house for small to medium sized venues since 2012. I went to school for Mechanical Engineering and worked in loudspeaker design for a couple years before moving to the Orlando area where I've been working in live audio. In the past couple years, I've taken more of an interest in mixing recorded projects while continuing to mix live on a regular basis.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: When not given direction otherwise, I tend to make a mix sound as natural as possible. Using mixing techniques to create clarity and get the recording gear "out of the way" so to speak.
