Interview with Justin Ward

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both...I have been told many times before I have an old soul. I guess that's why I gravitate to the sound of analog. But this day and age digital allows me to do what ever I need to regardless of what analog gear I have and achieve the results very close if not the same as analog.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: My goal is to take the clients vision and take it to the highest quality possible.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: I get to make music everyday and bring peoples' visions to life.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: What are you looking to achieve with your projects? What sound are you looking for?

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Take your work seriously and put your heart and soul into it. I love working with artists that have a passion for what they do.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: A solar generator, my laptop, a good set of open back headphones, a usb powered interface, and my guitar.

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: At 16 I joined my first band and I have been making music ever since.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Old school with a modern twist.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: Dave Grawl- I think he is a super talented Songwriter, Producer and Musician. Just an all around bad ass and seems to be one of the nicest guys you would ever meet. I think I would learn a lot from him.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Always be open minded but know when to make a decision.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Any thing in the Rock and Blues vein.

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: Pulling the best out of the artist. Pushing them to their full potential.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: An outside perspective, which could be the best thing for a song. A lot of times a song needs a different set of ears, someone who is thinking about every thing the song is trying to accomplish. Having an outside opinion can be the missing link to take a good song to a great song. Ex......Is the structure of the song right? Dose it need something more, dose it need less of something? Dose the song express the right emotion? Are the artist involved giving their best? Is the song going to speak to its targeted audience? If the song is going to be on an album dose it fit with the rest of the songs? Dose the guitar solo need to be redone? Is the singer standing too close to the mic?

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: Simple yet effective, fully acoustically treated room large enough to record a full band. Tuned just right for a great sounding recording, mixing and, mastering session.
