Interview with Finn Martin

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Sheela’s new song. It’s yet to be released but it’s one of my favourite songs I’ve worked on. It’s a concise punchy song that I’ve had the pleasure of being producer & mixer on.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Sheela’s new track Antoinette!

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital. I adore this question, good one Sound Better! I believe that accepting and using the new technology that emerges such as digital models is extremely important in the development of this industry. In saying that I’m not opposed to analog and it certainly has its place.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: I generally ask for 5 songs they want their song to sit amongst. This gives me a great idea as to what people aim to achieve from the production. It’s not about making things sound the same as but inspired by.

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Don’t go with someone you’ve been influenced to pick. Listen to samples read things like this from different people and decide based on what they can bring to your song

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: As many people in sound do I started as a musician. I played a gig and assisted the engineer and honestly found performing to be unparalleled in comparison to the setup! From there I started working at more and more gigs and getting involved in recordings.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Don’t be afraid. People are often afraid of pushing things too hard - EQ, compression etc. These things are tools utilise. You can always dial back

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Alternative. From punk and metal to folk. I’d be delighted to work on anything just get in contact and let’s chat!

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Blending modern mixing techniques into traditional recording concepts to create a modern record.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I love incorporating samples into traditional recordings this creates depth and unique sounds.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I work in and around different studios in Belfast where I track for clients. I have a home studio where majority of my mixing gets done.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Butch Vig. Massive sounds and an ethos very similar to mine.
