Interview with Jan Rydl

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: That I will do my best to deliver what they need. I believe it. Of course there is not universal truth in art.

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Talk a lot to the person. Describe your goal and observe if the person on the other side can understand and communicate back to you properly.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: It is new music every day.

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: Generally my own productions topped with my mixes getting so much better over time.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: Which service would you like? What are your goals? What concerns do you have? What do you want to retain in your song. What do you think needs extra care? Are you happy?

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: Any polyphonic synth, any eq with nice highpass and lowpass, delay and I can do anything. Saturating compressor and any DAW.

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: A lot of years in. I would say that career in mixing takes decade+ to even start shaping. Being from small country in Europe can not compare to big cities and the process takes even longer. Fifteen years since I first decided to push music I am mixing and occasionally producing, exclusively remotely.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Versatile, open to new things, with solid foundation. Honest.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: All ITB, great monitoring. Easy.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: Mixing of singles, albums, stems. Processing from raw audio takes takes to final delivery. Edits of all kinds.

  21. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  22. A: Digital, because of convenience, speed and quality to match.

  23. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  24. A: The unavoidable need for creativity and overcoming obstacles. Technicality too.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Do things!

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: Modern sounds, based on electronic instruments, novel sound design and lyrical content.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Openness, so understanding.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I hope I bring everything the song and the people behind it needs. Happy to push my signature, when possible.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: Typical. Conversations, edits, gain staging, cuts, comps, boosts, space, more conversations.
