Interview with Pien van Meegen
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it's an easy job and more a 'hobby' than a profession.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's the story of the song or what would you like that story to be?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Trust your gut feeling!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My career path is to be a full-time singer-songwriter and work on amazing projects all over the world.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Lyrics; Honest, open, catchy with a twist. Vocally: Warm, bright, wide range and great vocal control.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Maggie Rogers to learn from her process and witness her work.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Trust your instincts.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop/rock music is my speciality but I also did a lot of projects for (musical)theatre productions.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Creativity and vocal skills.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring originality and creativity to a song, this can be lyrically or vocally. I'm in service of the client and will do whatever they have envisioned for the song but also bring my own ideas to the table.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to sit down with a client to discuss the project with them and with all the information I've got from this meeting, I start writing/recording different ideas and send these ideas to the client. We meet up again or have contact via email until the project is done or we have a session in a rehearsal space/recording studio and work face-to-face.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My biggest influences are Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush and Maggie Rogers.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I help clients with writing songs with/for them and with singing (backing)vocals for them. This can be in a recording studio (provided by me or by them) or live during a gig.
