Manu Sartan

Session Bass Player

Manu Sartan on SoundBetter

Buenos Aires-based session bass player with broad experience in contemporary music

I've studied music during my entire life, with special focus of learning music theory in order to understand exactly what I'm playing. My personal preferences start from rock and funk (my entrance to bass guitar) but I've developed experience in pop, blues, soul and jazz.
To get along any project, I'm equipped with a Jazz Bass, a Precision Bass, a five-string active bass and a fretless bass. Any sound you are looking for is found upon my gear.
At last, the track can be send either produced or raw, that's the customer's personal choice.

Interview with Manu Sartan

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Luna PM. Great great singer that I know is doing great at SoundBetter

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: I'm more of analog but the market speed and the technological developments is making digital my favorite. The fact that you can do a whole record with just a computer, an interface and an instrument is just breathtaking.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: To search for the sound they hear in their heads and bring it to life. It's not about what I do, is about how can I help to make real that sound.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: That bass playing is easily replaces by samples and MIDI but, as Michael League said, the difference between a good bass player and a great bass player that a great bass player knows exactly what to play and when and knows exactly when NOT to play.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: First of all to listen well the song to be recorded. Then, get the key and general structure of the song. Last, get the chords from the song. After this I play along several times to get the groove and the feel of the song. At last, I record it and start production steps (if needed)

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: My Jazz Bass, a tuner, my Ampeg, my Macbook and an iPad. All that I need to fulfill my bass job.

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I've studied music since I was 14 years. My focus has always been to know music theory independently of bass knowledge. Today, after studying at a private school in Buenos Aires, my next step is to get into orchestral scoring for movies.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I get along with song writing, rock, pop, blues and jazz.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: I handle every bass technique (finger, pick, slap, chords) but what I think is the most important thing is to know how much and when it's time for each bass technique.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: A solid foundation. I know pretty well when a bass line can come up with something special and when it must remain low profile.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I'm currently upgrading my home studio but the actual setup is: MacBook Pro, Behringer UM22 audio interface, Sony MDR7506 monitors, Ampeg Micro VR head stock

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: I'm inspired by Jacob Collier, Andres Rot (Argentinean bass player), Vulfpeck, Michael League

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Regular bass track recordings. I offer various working methods meaning I can record with my gear and send a raw audio unit or a produced one. That is on demand of the client.
