Julian Castelli on SoundBetter

I help rock artists create powerful, radio-ready mixes that capture the energy, emotion and impact of classic rock. Inspired by legendary bands such as Led Zeppelin, Free, Bad Company, Grand Funk Railroad and modern blues rock.

Powerful, dynamic rock mixes that hit hard and stay memorable.

I specialize in Classic Rock, Blues Rock, Hard Rock, Southern Rock and guitar-driven music, delivering punchy drums, massive guitars, deep bass and vocals that command attention.

My philosophy is simple: serve the song first. Every mix is built to maximize emotion, energy and impact, not just loudness.

As a songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and recording, mixing and mastering engineer, I understand both the creative and technical sides of making great records. If you'd like, I can also contribute tasteful arrangement and production ideas.

Using Pro Tools and Cubase Pro 14 with an analog-inspired workflow, I create modern mixes with the warmth, punch and dynamics that made classic rock timeless.

Standard mixes include up to 40 tracks. Larger sessions or extensive editing are quoted individually.

Interview with Julian Castelli

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I'm especially proud of is my original music with The Julian Castelli Project / Black Water Canyon. I handled the songwriting, production, recording, mixing and mastering, giving me complete creative control from the first idea to the final master. It reinforced how important it is for every technical decision to support the emotion of the song.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently producing, mixing and mastering original rock music while expanding my work with independent artists looking for powerful, dynamic and emotionally engaging productions.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I'm still getting to know the talented community on SoundBetter. As I build relationships, I'll be happy to recommend professionals whose work I genuinely trust.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. Digital offers incredible precision and flexibility, while analog-inspired techniques bring warmth, depth and character. I use the strengths of each to serve the song.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to treat your music with the same care and passion I give my own. Honest communication, attention to detail and a mix that serves your vision, not my ego.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Hearing a song come alive. There's nothing more rewarding than delivering a mix that exceeds an artist's expectations and captures the emotion they imagined.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: "Can you make my song sound professional?" My answer is yes, provided the performance and recording give us a strong foundation. Great mixes begin with great source material.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That mixing is about making everything louder. Great mixing is about balance, emotion and helping every instrument support the song.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What artists inspire this song? What emotion should listeners feel? Do you have reference tracks? The better I understand your vision, the better I can bring it to life.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Listen to complete songs, not just portfolios. Choose someone whose style matches your vision and who communicates clearly. A great working relationship makes for a great record.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Cubase Pro, a reliable audio interface, studio headphones, a great microphone and a guitar. Give me those, and I'll find a way to make music anywhere.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've spent years writing, recording, producing and mixing my own music while continually refining my craft. That hands-on experience helps me understand both the creative vision and the technical side of every project.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Powerful, dynamic and musical. I aim for wide guitars, punchy drums, clear vocals and mixes that feel alive without sacrificing warmth or dynamics.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Rival Sons. They capture the spirit of classic rock while pushing it forward, and their music is built around dynamics, musicianship and emotion, the qualities I value most in a production.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: A great mix starts with a great performance. Capture emotion first, plugins should enhance the music, not try to create it.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Classic Rock, Blues Rock, Hard Rock, Southern Rock and guitar-driven music. I also enjoy helping singer-songwriters bring authentic performances to life.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Turning great songs into powerful, emotional mixes that sound polished while preserving the artist's identity and performance.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring perspective, musicality and attention to detail. Every decision serves the song, creating mixes that are powerful, dynamic and emotionally engaging without sacrificing the artist's identity.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I begin by understanding your vision, then build a balanced mix from the ground up. You'll receive a draft for feedback, followed by revisions until the final mix and master capture the sound you're after.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work in Cubase Pro with a carefully selected collection of professional plugins and monitoring tools. My workflow combines modern precision with an analog-inspired approach to tone, punch and dynamics.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Led Zeppelin, Free, Bad Company, Grand Funk Railroad, The Black Crowes, Rival Sons, Chris Lord-Alge, Andy Wallace and Bob Clearmountain. Their focus on emotion, dynamics and timeless mixes continues to inspire my work.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I specialize in mixing and mastering guitar-driven rock with powerful drums, wide guitars, deep bass and vocals that connect emotionally. My goal is to enhance your vision, not replace it.
