Interview with Felipe Bonilla
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I love both, but for mixing I prefer digital. Better control, period. Mixing In The Box gives me a flexibility and efficiently with a lot of precision in tweaks.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is that I always do my best to give you extraordinary sound to your vision and music.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: To make music. Music is my very first and true love.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Music takes time. There are people who think that mixing is some kind of AI-powered mechanical job. In an ideal world, mixing is enhancing/bringing out the heart of the song, but not changing production. Also, mixing is not about miracles. If production isn't good, the final mix won't be good neither.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you dislike about the current mix, what is the mood board of the song and what kind of artist would you like to sound?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Make sure you have a clear vision of your song. Spending quality time on your rough mix is key as this will be my blueprint.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I studied Filmmaking and then male several Recording Engineering courses at University. I worked in local studios and now I'm working as a freelancer.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: All-Fi. I can do hi-fi but I'm not opposed to heavy compression, distortion or other lo-fi elements when appropriate. I tend to gravitate towards big/warm/full mixes though much more than thin/bright/crunchy. My work style is commutative, open-minded, and meticulous. My own personal music style is kind of dark and organic with a very subtle touch of Latin American soul.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Never force the hype. If you feel stuck or tired, stop. Take a break. Music is magic and magic doesn't happens by pushing but by feeling it.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Honestly a bit of everything, but in recent years I tend to work with electronic and indie local artist.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Attention to detail, strong sensibility and a creative mind set.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I like to think I bring the song's need to fulfillment. I never force the mix, and if the production has soul, I would bring just a little touch to accomplish the final sound.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Every client is different! But usually after I receive steams I like to get all details possible about the project. I will prep the session and let the client know if there's something missing. About a week later I send a first proposal and meet the client in order to give that extra mile to all the details missing in the mix.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a dedicated mixing room and extensive software and plugins, all centered around Pro Tools and my monitor setup.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Anomalie, Karol G, C Tangana, Aphex Twin, Bonobo, Kaytranada
