Interview with Juho Karenko

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I've been producing, recording, mixing and mastering for more than 10 years and playing in bands for more than 20 years.

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: Pissed off.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: Tool - their music is complex - not necessarily complicated - with a ton of dynamics and harmonies with a distinct sonic signature.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Always reference.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Metal.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Pinpointing an issue and finding a solution.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: Regarding the construction of a song I will be able to bring a second opinion on what works or doesn't, how a part would work better or how the macro dynamics could shift.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: I like having a nice, casual chat about the project before agreeing to anything, because I want to make sure I am a good fit. After the initial getting to know your band and your goals, I would love to hear anything you have planned or how you envision the next phases of your project progressing. We may agree to do some pre-production work together or jump straight to mixing, drum editing, re-amping or even mastering. Everything is up to the needs of your project and budget.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: I have a commercial, acoustically treated recording and mixing studio. Capability to record at least 24 tracks simultaneously.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: I admire the work of Andy Sneap.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: I record the artist in my commercial studio or at the client's place, for example their own rehearsal place.
