Interview with Andrew Marshall
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mainly do metal.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: On the first day I do all the preparation of the song to be mixed, be it editing, tuning, etc. then I do all the mixing, when I am fully satisfied, I do the mastering. I separate each stage so that I approach the project with a clearest mind possible, which is crucial in my job.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly specialize in mixing, but also in producing and recording. Nowadays you can't really produce and record for bands remotely, so mixing is my way of working with music.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I always had a pretty much my own approach to a sound. My goal as a mix engineer is to bring out the energy and character of the source in a natural way, so I never over-process my mixes, I want them to breathe, move and develop throughout the song.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: The main secret to a great song and it's sound - is your performance, recording quality and the feelings behind the song. When anything of the above is wrong - mixing engineer will try to fix this, but it will sound unnatural.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I always try to bring out the emotion, development and make the song sound "alive".
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Without a doubt my biggest inspiration is Meshuggah, these are the guys who destroyed and reinvented the metal scene not only in terms of their music but also their production and sound.
