Interview with Vesta Sixx
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I enjoy very much to work with different artist and discover new music to listen
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work with trap, reggaeton and punk rock bands
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: We can not fix something if it doesn't have a decent quality, and I'm not talking about expensive gear I mean a good take of instruments and vocals.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: If it is a mix and mastering service, what are the artist or songs of reference? If you can not define it, I can make a mix then I show you how is advancing and I make corrections depending on your taste. If it is a beat, what kind of sound are you looking for? do you want a new sound identity or you already have one?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: put your ideas on the table and express what are you looking for exactly and then advance to the work
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I`ve been working as a beatmaker since I was 14, now I`m 29, at the age of 15 I started to play guitar, then I move out to the piano at 17 and I started to learn how to sing with a professional vocalist at 18, then I studied to be a sound tecnician at 21 and I decided to learn how to Dj so a inscribed to a Dj academy, then I did a mentory with a sound egenieer (winner of a gardel award in my country) to keep moving foward and I learned how to mix with fundaments and not because a tutorial from youtube, and these days I`m thinking on study sound egenieering on the university to be even better every day. Also I studied to use ableton and I did another mixing course in university CETEAR. Also I worked making live sound for an artist called OCK as a Dj and sound tecnician.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: A well mixed song start on the sounds selection and musical composition, not in the final project!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Discipline
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can bring self identity for a song and balance to the mix, also better volume.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start talking with my client, because I want to understad his vision as an artist, the sound that hes looking for and what`s the concept behind the song, behind the art an then we work on the mix or the beat.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Normally, I make mix and mastering for my clients and as a producer I make beats, sound desing based on the client preferences, mix my own ideas with the client taste. I like to study the references from my clients because sometimes they like just a sound from a song or an FX and details for me are very important to get my clients get satisfied with the beat.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I rent a professional studio to do my mixes but as a producer I use krk 5 monitors and a simple focusrite scarlett 2i2 the rest is all sound design even drums, I don't like to use too many library samples because it is very easy to fall into musical copies
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: As a mixer I`m very inspired by Teezio, for me he`s number one not because the equipment he uses, it`s because I think that if youre a mixer you need to get inspired by the music you`re working on, and just apply things based on what the song needs not because its a rule. As a producer I`m a big fan of Skrillex because of the freedom that he takes to make ideas into songs and the perfectionism on drum programing and sound desing for me it´s a perfect work.
