Interview with Lorenzo Cosi

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recently worked on Heartbreak Anthem for D. Guetta, Little Mix and Galantis as a writer and producer. This was one of my most successful tracks and I was grateful to be part of it.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A whole album of film music, my electronic projects, a trap beat + vocal production for a client, some cinematic music for an artistic swimming team.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not yet tbh.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I've had lots of analog gear over the years, but don't have much now apart from a few things. Reason is, digital keeps sounding better and better, especially if you know how to process it, and offers much more flexibility.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will care about your project, if we both decide to work on it together, and I will do my best to deliver something that I'm excited about as much as you are.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The music, the privilege of being able to do what I love, the state of flow that always happens when working on a good track.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: "How does this work and how long will it take?" A: "Let's define your goals together and define a path based on that"
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I don't think the average person realises how much work and research goes into producing a great track.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What can I do for you? How can I help? How do you envision the final product?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Know what you are looking for, and do your best to bring good material to the table.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Macbook Pro, Fender guitar, Apollo Interface+card, Audeze Headphones, APS Speakers.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Over 15 years in the industry, I started without knowing a single person in the business. I started by making coffees in a studio that gave me a chance after school, and slowly moved to technical jobs for them, first, then co-producing and writing, and eventually moved on to doing my own thing as an artist and producer.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Cinematic, melodic, edgy, left field, dreamy.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: The Moderat guys, because they're just so cool, experienced, musical. Especially Sascha. And Trent Reznor.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Stop overthinking and go back to "how does it make me feel?".
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Electronic, Pop, Film, TV, Advertising, Trap, Rock.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say perspective. I believe that the ability to see the big picture is the most important skill for a producer and I always try to provide this.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: What is needed, hopefully. Sometimes some re-writing might be needed, other times the right sound, or a great mix / sound design, or just the right mastering approach.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depends on the job! If we're talking about production, we'll generally discuss the direction with the client first, then work on a draft based on this and get a first round of feedback. If this sounds good we'll proceed with the work until finished.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work on a pair of APS Aeon-2 monitors (love these), An M1 Max Macbook Pro, all sorts of midi controllers, Apogee interface, UAD card, several guitars, basses, synthesisers...
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Some of my favourites are Fred Again, Bicep, Apparat, Moderat, Tycho, Bonobo, Kiasmos, Olafur Arnalds, Bon Iver, Trent Reznor.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I work mostly on production, both track and vocal production, but also remixing, mixing and mastering. I love working on music for movies and different types of electronic music, pop, rock, rap/trap beats.
