Interview with Julien
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently based in London, a place where the music business is considerable.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: In Logic pro X, when pressing the shortcut q, you can can quantize your work, and make your software instrument perfectly on time, on the beat.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock, Pop, Hip-Hop, EDM, Funk, Reggae, Trip-Hop...
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Beats creations and resolving rhythms issues is my main field. I've studied drums for years, in parallel with music production, so I am extremely aware of these issues.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can make your song sounds more professional, first by cleaning all the imperfections (rhythm imprecision, recording quality, etc...) and then bring my personal touch, suggesting some modifications to reveal its uniqueness.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I first have a brief with my clients (written or oral), to catch the main ideas and directions they want to reach. I then make a diagnostic of the song and analyse the good and less good points, without denaturing the idea. Then I create a first draft, that I send to my client. Then there a dialogue between my client and I and we repeat the process until the client is satisfied.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use the brand new version of Logic Pro X on Mac. I have multiple way of monitoring to compare the output of different systems. I have good quality neutral monitoring speakers to be really precise when working on some specific pieces, but I always pay attention on the songs to sound great on device of lower quality (that are, in fact, what most of the people use). The devices I use for this purpose are typically Marshall headphones, regular speakers on different computers, Roland PS-10 and bluetooth speakers like Bose and Phillips. I can have so the best sound possible in all the possible systems.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The 2nd Law is my favourite album in term of production. The collaboration between Nero and Muse inspires a lot on my way to think the music, it is a real good and clean mix of classic rock atmosphere and new electronic sounds. The production of The Weeknd is also a great influence, with its simple efficiency, its modernity, its hooks, and the use of the synth pads that leads to a really groovy and catchy songs.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I try to fit the best sound for my clients. Most of the time they describe the main ideas and gives some examples with well-known songs. As a music lover, I've listened to a lot of different styles and so I can suggest some ideas to support their song. My strengths are on the rhythm parts but I also have knowledges in harmony and melody writing.
