Interview with A D A M
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The A D A M project is the most important project of my career as an artist and self-producer. My album will be a concept mixing vintage (80's) and modern sounds at the same time. I will be singing both in English and French. This will tell the story of a character's journey to find love, from the fantasies of the perfect encounter to the moment when we lose ground and all notion of space and time. I do everything on this project.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working with a recognized French independent label on the production of my debut EP. At the same time, I am finalizing my album in my studio. So I have time to help artists on the different offers that I offer.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both are good. It depends on the color you want to obtain for your music. I work with digital. Digital recordings offer great flexibility in editing and manipulation. This allows precise processing and a faithful reproduction.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to do my best to achieve my clients' goals. Do not hesitate to give me as much detail as possible regarding expectations.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love creating. The little extra is to provide emotions to people.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "- We're stuck on this song. We would like to make it more mainstream. You have good sensitivity to find good ideas. Can you help us ? - Yes of course, I hope you'll like the results without distorting your ideas."
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The initial idea you have will never be the final one. In the production process, you will inevitably have new ideas (good or bad). Sometimes you will have to put these ideas aside. The result will reflect the mood in which you produced or composed your music.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Are you happy with the music you just finished?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: If you are looking for someone who can help you enhance your songs and who is good at communication, don't hesitate to contact me.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1/ Solar energy 2/ My acoustic guitar 3/ My laptop & external sound device 4/ A mic and headphones 5/ My coffee maker
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been a musical artist for around twenty years. I have a 10-year career in a French pop rock group. I composed the majority of the songs for the 3 EPs that we released. During this period, I was also able to have significant experience for the national television show Nouvelle Star in which I finished in the last 30 candidates. During the pandemic, I created my solo project A D A M and transitioned into the field of pop music. I have released 2 self-produced singles and I am currently working on my first album.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I'm an epic retro-modern composer. Catchy melodies are my brand.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I love Anthony Gonzalez from M83. He's French and he's such an inspiration. The "Hurry up, We're dreaming" album is a masterpiece.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Have some breaks !! Your perception of music is altered after 2 hours of work.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Synthpop, Synthwave, Retrowave, Electropop, Pop Rock
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I can find the best chords sequences to build the song as if it could be played on the radio
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can bring some melancholy, atmospheric retro vibes to catch some emotions.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When I have an idea of a catchy melody (vocals, piano, guitars), I open a new project on Logic Pro X and I start to build the song. Drums programming first, bass, piano, guitars, synths. When the arrangements are finished, I write the vocals melodies and the lyrics. I record, edit and tune them. I premix, mix the song. I do not listen to the bounced song during 2 or 3 days then I add some changes. When the mixed song is done, I master the song then I repeat the same process until I get goosebumps :)
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I'm working on Logic Pro X and I'm using multiple plugins/VSTs like Waves, Fabfilter, Baby Audio, Izotope, Neural DSP, etc...
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm fascinated by bands like Angels And Airwaves, The Maine, M83, Phoenix, Kavinsky, The Midnight, The 1975, U2
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I help artists to build a song by adding some ideas (guitars riffs, synths chords, vocals melodies). I can mix and master songs for you too.
