Interview with Matt B
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’m particularly proud of my work on the feature film Contention. As the lead sound editor and re-recording mixer, I had to balance complex dialogue scenes with ambient sound design that heightened the film’s tense atmosphere.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working on several projects, including a feature film, a documentary, and a commercial campaign.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I would recommend checking out other talented professionals on SoundBetter who specialize in different aspects of music production to complement my work.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Digital offers flexibility and speed, especially with tools like iZotope RX10 for restoration. However, analog can bring a warmth and richness that’s hard to replicate in digital, so I like to incorporate both when needed.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to deliver high-quality sound design and editing that enhances the storytelling and creates a memorable listening experience. I am committed to providing excellent customer service and working collaboratively to achieve the client's vision.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the creative freedom and the opportunity to collaborate with talented artists and filmmakers. I find it incredibly rewarding to contribute to the storytelling process and create immersive and emotionally resonant soundscapes.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Customers often ask about my process and how I ensure their vision is realized. I explain my collaborative approach and the importance of regular feedback loops. How much does it cost? The cost can vary depending on the project's scope and complexity. I provide tailored quotes based on the specific requirements. How long will it take? The timeline depends on the project's size and complexity, but I strive to deliver work within agreed-upon deadlines. Can you provide references? Yes, I can provide references from previous clients who can attest to my work quality and professionalism.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: A lot of people think post-production sound is just about making things louder or clearer, but it’s far more nuanced. It’s about storytelling through sound—crafting moments that enhance the narrative without distracting the audience.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask: What’s your vision for the sound of this project? Are there any specific audio issues I should be aware of? Do you have a reference for the type of sound you’re aiming for? These questions help me tailor my approach to meet the client's expectations.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for a provider with a proven track record, positive references, and a portfolio that aligns with your project’s needs. Communication is key, so ensure that the provider understands your vision and can deliver the desired results.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would take a portable recorder, a high-quality microphone, headphones, a laptop with Pro Tools, and a solar charger to keep everything powered.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been working in sound design and post-production for over a decade leading to formal education and hands-on experience in various productions.. I started out as a freelance sound editor, gradually moving into more complex roles like re-recording mixing. I’ve worked on over 70 projects, from indie films to major documentaries.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is cinematic and detail-oriented. I like to create immersive audio experiences that engage the listener emotionally while ensuring that all technical aspects are flawless.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to collaborate with someone like Hans Zimmer. His ability to seamlessly blend orchestral music with electronic elements and sound design would make for an incredible creative experience.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Focus on balance. In mixing, it’s easy to get caught up in one element, but always take a step back and listen to the track as a whole. Every sound should have its place, and nothing should overwhelm the listener.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: While I primarily work in film and television, I’ve mixed everything from orchestral scores to ambient soundscapes and electronic music for various projects. My versatility across genres is one of my strengths.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Dialogue cleanup and noise reduction. I’m known for taking seemingly unusable audio and transforming it into clear, professional-grade dialogue. This skill is especially crucial for films where live recordings often come with unexpected issues.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: For music-based projects, I focus on clarity and depth, ensuring that all sonic elements—vocals, instruments, effects—complement each other without competing for attention. I also bring a cinematic touch, often incorporating sound design techniques that make a track feel larger than life.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process involves collaborating closely with directors and clients to understand their vision, creating a detailed sound design plan, and executing it using industry-standard tools and techniques. I also ensure regular feedback loops to align with the client’s expectations.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is equipped with a state-of-the-art computer system running industry-standard audio software, high-quality audio interfaces, studio monitors, and a collection of microphones and instruments. I also have a variety of sound libraries and plugins to enhance my creative process.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I draw a lot of inspiration from legendary sound designers and mixers like Walter Murch and Gary Rydstrom. Their ability to craft immersive soundscapes and push the boundaries of storytelling through sound has been pivotal in shaping my approach to audio.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: As a sound designer, editor, and re-recording mixer, I primarily work on audio post-production for various media, including films, television shows, documentaries, commercials, and video games. This involves creating and manipulating sound effects, dialogue editing, and mixing audio tracks to achieve a desired sonic landscape.
