Interview with Alessio Meleo
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I almost always work on hip hop, mostly trap lately. But I am a fan of drums in fact I work for an Italian endorser, a drummer with whom I start from the recording to get to the mastering. All this through the official channels of the European YAMAHA.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I am a musician and therefore I can recognize sounds very quickly, I can solve many difficulties that often many engineers do not see. I immediately notice when there is a problem with the arrangement. What I do best is to find the right mood for each song, for each musical genre
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I like to give my best as if it were mine, and I don't stop working until I like it before pleasing my client. We discuss for the sake of the song, an excellent result brings both me and the artist a chance for growth.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually like to start with a good recording. If they send me material that is not right, I hardly try to work with it. My workflow is based first on preparing the tracks for the mix, such as editing on the tempo, on the cleanliness of the sound and on the intonation of instruments and vocals. Then I start the mix and then the mastering.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I think talking about setup today is not a relevant thing for the mix. Good ideas are much better. My studio is hybrid, I have an analog section that I use a lot in the shooting phase, and a completely digital section with UAD from universal audio and many other powerful software. I always work on Cubase Pro and Wavelab. On my website www.mixandmastering.it there is a tab where all my backline is listed (brands I use most are Neumann, Neve, Api, SSL, Klark Teknik, Universal Audio, Drawmer, Presonus, Adam Audio, Sennheiser, AKG , etc)
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I grew up listening to 80's music, my influences range from pop, funk, to rock. To name a few: Phil Collins, America, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, Queen, Earth Wind and Fire, Chic. In recent years the market has led me to work daily in the hip hop and electronics market in general. The reference artists are Daft Punk, Drake, Cardi B, Travis Scott, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Pop Smoke, and many others from the rap and trap scene.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I think to do a great job in music, you need a lot of passion. I immerse myself in the productions as if they were my own, I always take my clients' work to heart and often this gives me a lot of satisfaction.
