Interview with Triple Titan
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, simply as it's what I'm most comfy with - though I do see some benefits of analog in terms of warmth of sound when it comes to effects.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1. My laptop 2. Some headphones 3. A USB mic 4. An 88-key electronic keyboard 5. An acoustic electric guitar
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Think of mixing like taking a photograph of a beautiful room - you want to make sure all the objects (or sounds) all fit nicely into the picture with as little clutter (or "mud") in the room (or "mix") as possible!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Usually Hip-Hop, however my broad taste in music reflects the broad range of styles I’m able to write and produce in.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Probably coming up with ideas and grooves - I can ideate for days... I'm also excellent at arranging.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Firstly, I need to understand the vision and particular sound an artist is looking for. This involves simply sitting down and perhaps flicking through some reference tracks or playing around with some instruments or lyrics to ascertain the desired vibe. I tend to start with a chord progression then lay the drums second. Once I've created a short groove, I will look to arrange the song by extending it and giving the song structure. This would require input from the artist to ensure it fits the lyrics - then the vocals can be laid on top. To finish, I would mix and master the song.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Favourite solo artist would have to be a toss up between a Norwegian soul singer called Bernhoft and the rapper Logic… I actually was lucky enough to meet Bernhoft and his manager backstage after he headlined a gig back in 2014 - great guy, really friendly! Favourite band is a toss up between Muse, who were probably the first rock band I loved, and Coldplay, who I didn’t like years ago but they grew on me. Favourite producer is Timbaland, hands-down! Finally, my favourite composer would be a toss up between John Powell, my modern choice and Tchaikovsky, my “back-in-the-day” choice! John Powell’s work, especially his scores for animation which makes up the bulk of his work, are a great inspiration for me.
