Interview with Akai Phifer

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project that stands out prominently in my portfolio is the latest Stoner's Island album titled "It's Crazy What N!gg@s Into." My involvement in this album was extensive and deeply immersive. I had the privilege to produce all but two tracks, embedding each with a distinct sonic signature that complemented the artist's vision. Beyond production, I took on the intricate task of mixing and mastering the entire album. This allowed me to ensure consistency in sound quality, dynamics, and overall vibe. The cohesive sound and emotional depth of the album are testaments to the synergy between Stoner's Island's artistry and my production and engineering skills. It's a body of work that I hold in high esteem, not just for the technical accomplishments but for the collaborative spirit it encapsulates.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: a full length album from Roc Raw as well as a project titled Cloud Saga

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: No

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Given the choice between analog and digital, I lean more towards digital, primarily due to cost-effectiveness. While analog gear offers a certain warmth and character that's deeply appreciated, digital technology has advanced tremendously, allowing for high-quality production without the hefty price tag of analog equipment.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise to my clients is this: I will immerse myself in your vision, employing both my technical prowess and creative intuition to elevate your music. Together, we'll craft a sound that is authentic to you, ensuring that every nuance is captured and every emotion resonates. Your artistry is my priority, and I commit to delivering excellence in every note.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I cherish most about my role as a music producer and mixing engineer is the ability to transform raw emotions and ideas into a tangible sonic experience. Every project allows me to dive deep into the world of sound, experimenting with textures and dynamics to bring an artist's vision to life. It's a unique blend of artistry and technicality, where I get to be both a creative force and a problem solver. Witnessing the evolution of a track from its initial stages to a polished masterpiece and seeing the artist's satisfaction and listeners' reactions is immensely rewarding. In essence, it's the magic of turning sonic dreams into reality that keeps me passionate about what I do.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Q: How long will it take to produce/mix/master my track(s)? A: Typically, a standard track takes about 7 days for a complete production, mix, and master, but this can vary based on the complexity and specific requirements of the project. Q: How many revisions are included in the cost? A: The service includes three free revisions. Any additional revisions might incur extra fees, but I always aim to ensure you're satisfied with the final product. Q: Can you replicate the sound of [specific artist or song]? A: While I can certainly draw inspiration from any reference you provide and aim for a similar vibe, it's essential to create a unique sound that aligns with your own artistry. Q: What do you need from me to start the project? A: I'll need the raw recordings, any specific instructions or vision you have for the track, and references if available. Q: How much will the entire process cost? A: The cost varies based on the project's scope—production, mixing, mastering, or all three. I can provide a detailed quote once we discuss your specific needs. Q: What format should I provide the recordings in, and what will I receive at the end? A: Please provide recordings in WAV or AIFF format for best quality. At the end, you'll receive a mastered WAV file and, if requested, individual stems or other specific formats.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception about my role as a music producer and mixing engineer is that it's purely technical. Many believe that we simply push buttons and adjust levels. In reality, it's an intricate blend of artistry and technique. Every decision made, from EQ adjustments to reverb application, is driven by a deep understanding of the music, the artist's vision, and the emotional impact we want to convey. Our role is as much about capturing and enhancing emotion as it is about technical precision.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Vision: What sound or mood are you aiming for? Influences: Which artists or songs inspire this track or project? Scope: Is this for mixing, production, or both? Deadlines: When do you need the final product? Format: How would you like the final tracks delivered? Feedback: Are there elements in your demo you'd like emphasized or changed? Budget: What is your budget for this project? Collaboration: Will any other professionals be involved?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Know Your Vision: Before approaching any provider, have a clear idea of what you're aiming for. Whether it's a specific sound, mood, or influence, knowing your artistic direction can help in effective communication. Listen to Their Work: Always review the portfolio or discography of the professional. It will give you insights into their versatility, quality, and style. Open Communication: It's vital to establish a rapport and maintain open dialogue. This ensures your vision aligns with the final output. Budgeting: Understand the costs involved. While it's tempting to opt for more affordable options, quality often comes at a price. Investing in good production can be the difference between a good track and a great one. Seek Feedback: If possible, talk to past clients or collaborators of the provider. Their experiences can offer invaluable insights. Stay Involved: Your involvement doesn't end after handing over the tracks. Stay engaged in the process, provide feedback, and ensure the end product aligns with your initial vision. Trust Their Expertise: While it's your vision, remember that you're hiring them for their expertise. Sometimes, their suggestions can elevate your track in ways you hadn't imagined. Final Deliverables: Ensure you discuss and agree upon the final formats, versions, and stems you'll receive at the end of the project.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My computer, the epicenter of my digital creations. My MPC, a trusted companion for beats and sampling. My keyboard, to craft melodies and harmonies. A high-quality pair of headphones, ensuring that every nuance of sound is captured. A solar-powered charger or power source to ensure my gear remains functional and to fuel my creativity endlessly

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: My journey in the music industry has been both enriching and transformative. I embarked on this path 15 years ago, and over this extensive period, I've had the privilege to witness and adapt to the evolving sonic landscapes of Hip Hop and R&B. My dedication to the craft has been unwavering, and the years have only deepened my passion and honed my skills. From early explorations to mastering sophisticated production tools, my career has been a testament to continuous learning, growth, and a relentless pursuit of musical excellence

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style seamlessly blends a deep appreciation for the classic nuances of Hip Hop and R&B with a modern touch. Rooted in creativity, imagination, and focus, I strive to elevate every track's inherent character. Influenced by industry greats and the rich tools at my disposal, I aim for a sound that's polished yet soulful, ensuring every production resonates with both timelessness and contemporary flair.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would be honored to collaborate with J. Cole. His profound lyricism, combined with his authentic approach to Hip Hop, resonates deeply with me. J. Cole’s ability to weave intricate stories with societal commentary sets him apart in the industry. Working with him would offer a unique opportunity to merge our respective strengths and craft music that not only entertains but also evokes thought and introspection.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: When producing, resist the urge to fill every frequency range with sound. Instead, carve out specific spaces for each instrument and vocal. Utilize EQ to roll off frequencies that aren't essential to the character of an instrument. For instance, if you have a deep bass line and a kick drum playing simultaneously, consider carving out a little space in the bass sound to let the kick's primary frequency punch through. This ensures each element in the track can be heard distinctly, preventing muddiness. The result is a clean, professional-sounding mix where each element has its own place, allowing the track to breathe and resonate with clarity.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I predominantly work on Hip Hop and R&B

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My foremost strengths lie in my pronounced creativity, keen imagination, and unwavering focus, enabling me to consistently deliver innovative and high-caliber results.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: What I bring to a song is a fusion of technical expertise and a deep reverence for the art of music

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My typical work process begins with an in-depth consultation with the artist or client to understand their vision and sonic preferences. Once aligned, I import the raw recordings into my DAW of choice—often Pro Tools, but occasionally I opt for Studio One or FL Studio depending on the project's requirements. Leveraging the power of the Waves Mercury Bundle, I begin the initial sound shaping, harnessing its vast plugin suite to breathe life into the tracks. As I dive deeper into the mix, I incorporate tools from the Fab Filter and Slate bundles to achieve the desired depth, warmth, and clarity. Throughout the mixing process, I'm continually referencing the works of my inspirations like Dr. Dre, Bob Powers, Dave Pensado, and J Dilla to ensure the output remains both innovative and timeless. After the primary mix is complete, I provide the artist with a draft, initiating our revision process. With three included revisions, we fine-tune the track until it perfectly captures the artist's intent. Once finalized, I employ meticulous mastering techniques to ensure the track is radio-ready and translates well across all listening platforms

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio is meticulously equipped to offer the highest quality in music production and mixing. Central to my setup is the industry-renowned Pro Tools, complemented by Studio One and FL Studio, ensuring versatility in digital audio production. To enrich the sonic texture, I've integrated the Waves Mercury Bundle, offering an extensive range of plugins and tools. The Fab Filter and Slate bundles further enhance my toolkit, allowing for precision in sound sculpting

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: In the realm of music production, I draw significant inspiration from esteemed professionals such as Dr. Dre, Bob Powers, Dave Pensado, and the legendary J Dilla.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I specialize in music production and mixing, catering to a diverse clientele to enhance and elevate their sonic presentations
