Hey! Welcome to Half Dutch Productions. My name’s Jack and I’m an award winning songwriter and poet. I’ve spent most of the last 10 years working on my craft as an international touring artist, which has led to me producing songs with over a million streams and being featured in the UK national press.
My artist project is currently signed to an indie record label in Nashville, where I was mentored in songwriting and music production. As well as writing and producing songs, I also work as an online session musician - performing on other peoples’ tracks, and I’ve co-written songs which have been released by multiple international touring artists.
My main focus has been indie pop music and indie folk music. This includes genres like acoustic, singer-songwriter, acoustic pop and folk-pop. I also have some experience with country music and bluegrass, between my time in Nashville and experience working with artists in the UK country music scene.
Here’s a list of the instruments I’ve played on previous releases:
Acoustic/ Electric Guitar
Synth/ electric bass
Banjo
Mandolin
Piano
Synth (Sound designed)
Acoustic and electronic drums

Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Definitely lyrics. I was the kind of kid who would write short stories and novels when I would get home from school. I learned my first 2 chords on guitar and started writing my first songs. I've kept a journal since I was 12 (I'm now 30) and my favourite books as a kid were all poetry books. As I got older, songwriting just seemed like the natural extension to my skillset, and I got drawn to songwriters who moved me and told stories with their songs.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I've spent quite a few years nerding out about songwriting theory - reading books, attending seminars and learning as much as possible. I did that in Nashville, over the course of a few years (it added up to about 5 months total). I paid for those trips by playing a lot of shows around London, Europe and Australia. So I got a lot of songwriting knowledge and experience, while building up a lot of life experience.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It depends on the job, but I often start with sketching out ideas using Scaler 2. Once I have the basic skeleton on there, I will work on the textural palette and then arrange a basic outline of the track. I'm finding that I'm using a lot more VSTs as my workload increases - I'm taking my knowledge of how I would play an instrument and applying it to some of the highest-quality sample libraries. It's quite easy to make them sound amazing and realistic, once you accept that that becomes part of the workflow now.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: In terms of mics, I have a Neumann TLM-102 and an Ear Trumpet Labs Delphina. Between those two, I can always get the tone I'm going for. The Neumann reacts really well to close micing, and the Delphina will always give me a bit more low-end warmth if I need it. I run my mics through a UAD Apollo Twin and work out of a home studio, using Ableton Live 11.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love the hip-hop ethos of just pulling up your socks and getting on with the work. I'm also a big fan of Joey Moi - he's producing some great artists out of Nashville at the moment, and seems to be pumping out a lot of amazing tracks, that's quite inspiring!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I've done a lot of custom songwriting work over the last year - being sent briefs and writing for clients. Recently it has mostly been love songs, but I did some other writing for sync briefs while I was living in Nashville. I've also done a lot of toplining/ EDM sessions for Nashville and LA producers, where I was requested to join as a lyricist. I was also commissioned to record banjo sample pack for a Nashville based company.
