Interview with Peivol
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People often say that nowadays, with autotune and all editing tools, anyone can make music. However, it's not the case. All artists using these tools possess skills in various areas to be great musicians. Autotune doesn't solve a lack of creativity, for example; it's just one more tool.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are you seeking with the song, what is your goal, how would you like it to sound, what elements would you like me to contribute to the song, and what are your musical references for this project?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: For potential clients seeking my services, I'd advise ensuring clear communication about your musical vision and expectations. Provide as much detail as possible, share references, and be open to collaboration. Additionally, feel free to ask any questions you may have about the process. A successful collaboration is built on a mutual understanding of goals and a transparent exchange of ideas.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A computer, my synthesizer, an interface, microphone, and headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: User I started producing my own songs and covers in 2018, but I've been studying music since I was 7. In 2020, I became more focused on making a living from this passion, and in 2022, I began studying Music Production at ORT University, where I have one final project remaining to complete the program. I've been working with artists for a year, handling production, mixing, mastering, and recording instruments.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my style as versatile, drawing inspiration from a range of genres including indie, rock, and pop. My approach is characterized by a blend of creativity and technical precision, ensuring a unique and polished sound tailored to each project's vision.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I enjoy collaborating with artists with whom I can establish a musical connection, and usually, we share a similar taste in music.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: A valuable tip I can offer is that sometimes less is more. It's better to use a few elements that sound exactly as intended rather than adding unclear or unnecessary layers that don't contribute positively to the overall song. Clarity and purpose in each element often result in a more impactful and effective musical composition.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I typically work in indie, rock, and pop genres, but I am versatile and have experience in various styles from shoegaze to reggaeton. When it comes to mixing and mastering, I can handle a wide range of genres as long as the artist provides clear references for their desired sound.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is successfully merging the creativity and vision of the artist with technical expertise. Additionally, I am known for my efficiency in delivering high-quality work swiftly.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a unique blend of creativity, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of various musical elements to enhance and elevate a song. My skills include proficient instrument playing, MIDI programming, and a keen sense of arrangement. Additionally, my experience as a music producer allows me to bring clarity, balance, and a professional touch to the overall sound through meticulous mixing and mastering. Together, these elements contribute to creating a compelling and polished final product.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical process depends on the project or song, but generally, I like to begin by discussing the artist's influences and what they aim to achieve with the song. This allows me to create a tailored work plan that aligns with their vision and objectives.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: In my studio, I have a Focusrite 18i8 audio interface, an Audio-Technica AT2020 microphone, a Roland XPS-10 synthesizer, a Squier Precision Bass, a Yamaha guitar, PreSonus monitors, and AKG K72 and K52 headphones.
