Interview with Justin Gambino

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: An acoustic guitar, a laptop with a daw installed, a condenser mic, an audio interface, and my studio headphones.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I’ve been doing this since middle school. I have worked freelance and in the studio scene in Nashville at major studios.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: Knox he is like the new age pop punk and I think it would be extremely fun.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: I’m good at figuring things out and getting the job that’s needed done.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: I like to get a barebones outline and skeleton first before real production work gets going. I find it easier to finish projects that way. Just an acoustic or E piano with some vocals and basic groove elements first. Than we can add the 100 tracks and layers after we know what we are making.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: Hybrid studio with multiple mics including a UAD Sphere, a epiphone and Taylor acoustic, a telecaster with a humbucker in the bridge with a coil split, all the Arturia synths, all the UAD and baby audio plugins, I use both logic and Cubase, tons of other plugin subscriptions. A 5 string fender bass, and a load of Vst synths including some like Serum 2, Keyscape etc

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: Death cab for cutie for songwriting, early 2000s scene and metalcore music for drum production thoughts gotta love those huge snare drum hits!, Blink-182 and pop punk music for its catchy nature and making something so simple extremely satisfying, EDM as a whole for sound design and layering but main inspiration Skrillex, Daft Punk, Rezz, Glitch Mob, and Hip Hop! For great low end and grooves. Joyner Lucas stuff, Nas, etc.

  15. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  16. A: whatever gets the job done. this is a time wasting debate with no real answer with pros and cons for both sides.

  17. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  18. A: seeing an artist bring their creative works to life and actually being proud of themselves and filled with confidence.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: talk to whoever you are looking into hiring and make sure the fit is right for you and the engineer/producer.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: You don't need all the fancy gear to make something professional your stock plugins in your DAW of choice work perfectly fine. If a new piece of gear or plugin helps improve your workflow so you can stay in the creative flow state longer.. then its worth buying imo.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: sounds cliché but all genres. These days I have been enjoying Synthwave, Indie Pop vibes. Recently created a Cyberpunk beat for someones business advertisement. So I truly bounce around.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: Attention to detail and not a cookie cutter template. A song gets every part of me and music is not treated like a dr. office.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Mixing, Production/Beat making, and Mastering
